Riding through the Rockys in May
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:21:01 AM »

I trying to find out if its still snowing across the Rockys in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana during May. I got a group of friends headed to Washington from the east and helping them plan a route. If it still snowing there in May it looks like it would be best to stay on I40 and cut north through Moab and SaltLake City.

Crap shoot could be snow as late as June. It's pretty hard to get to Washington with out crossing a pass or two. Wyoming and Montana would be the most scenic route once you get half way through Montana you hit mountains and stay in them until you are at the Washington border. You go another 200 miles and you hit the Cascade Mountains after which you come down to the Seattle area.

Make sure you take some heated clothing -- the weather can change suddenly at that time of year. Allow yorself time for the unexpected - blizzards are not unheard of in May in the Rockies but they do tend to clear up fairly quickly.
On the plus side it is truly a beautiful ride !!

Interesting question as five of us are shipping our bikes and driving south from Calgary through Montana down to Vegas east to Atlantic and North to Home. I was also wondering what kind of weather we can expect in Montana around 15th May.

I've been caught in a blizzard in the Rocky passes in late June.  Thus, just be prepared.  Regardless of snow, it will be cold in the higher elevations.  You really need to plan for that more than anything else in my opinion.

Chances you will be OK in Colorado... especially if late May.  Could be trickier further north.  I've taken trips over high Colorado mountain passes in May the past ten years.  If it snows it will be a wet snow and melt quickly.  And FWIW, I've ridden over 3000 miles this winter at 8800ft. in the Rockies.

Just the other day, from Cripple Creek (near 10,000ft.) to Divide... http://www.farson.com/video/flcripple.wmv

Shipping bikes as we have time constraint. We have to be back in three weeks. As it is I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Probably rack up close to 10,000kms. But you're right if time wasn't a factore I'd drive to Calgary as well.
