Shipping a bike from US to Europe
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:39:35 AM »

My wife and I have considered taking the machine overseas and cruising from Ireland to Italy thru Spain. Have any of you shipped your bike over and back? What was the cost? How long did it take? I'm sure you hooked up with some folks over there you met here right?? How'd that work out?

Garry, a couple of friends of mine looked into that last summer. It was tremendously expensive and risky (delivery coordination and damage); seem to remember over $3K. They ended up renting an Ultra in Italy and tooled around that way. Much cheaper with a lot less hassle. They loved the trip too.

Generally if your vacation is of 3weeks or less then it prolly betta/cheaper to flynride, if your planning a much longer break then it would work out financially to fly your own bike over, If you decide to fly your bike do it with a known/recommended motorcycle transporter that knows and will sort out all of the import/export paperwork for you!

Remember to fly a bike you will have to drain all fluids petrol/oil out of it.

I also heard that it depends on your length of trip.  If more than 3 weeks, it is cheaper to ship your own bike over the Fly & Ride program.  Plus you get to ride YOUR bike!

I haven't followed up with a guy I know yet, but apparently Air Transat will fly your bike over a day or two ahead of you and when you land all you do his head to their cargo area and you're usually on the road while the rest of the passengers are still collecting their luggage.

My wife and I are planning on the same type of trip, but not just yet so we haven't looked into it in detail yet.

Have a great trip of a lifetime and don't miss going over the amazing bridge connecting the mountains of France & Spain... Saw it on Discovery Channel and can't wait to ride it!

Please let us know what you decide on.

Take care & ride safe,

Check with Nige, BalDeagle. He did the opposite, from UK to US. He could give you some info on the shipping.
