Renew Hog Membership or let it go?
« on: April 05, 2009, 04:21:11 PM »

My renewal dues for H.O.G. are due this month. Other than the magazine is there any other value to joining up again? The annual dues are $45.00 for one year, two years for $85.00 and $120.00 for three years. My insurance and the extended coverage takes care of any towing I may require. Who am I kidding it's not "may require" it should read will need positively require again".  What I need with my SERK is like the product that advertises the usefull medical emergency unit "help I fell and can't get up" mine should send a message out to the nearest dealer and say "help my TBW is not talking to my ECM and I can't get out of limp mode".

Anyway yes or no to H.O.G.

Well, ya get the 'cool' patch & pin annually...
                          :-\

and a tow service up to $100 in value once a yr. 100 bucks doesn't take ya very far.

yes or no really depends on your involvement so far in a hog chapter or if you attend events/rallies

if you think the benefits of hog discounts are worth it, are you into HD for life? then renew as a life member

As an officer of our local chapter, I MAY be a little biased, but I believe you get out of the club what you put into it. If you're not a "joiner", you probably won't feel you're getting your money's worth.

Just buy a new bike every year and it's free.    If you live in the sticks like I do I think it's a lot of money for what you get.

Let your membership expire, and you just might get the offer they made to me; renew for $25 instead of $45.

It never has been worth the money to those of us who aren't "joiners", and if it hadn't come with the purchase of new bikes I'm quite certain I (and untold thousands of others) would have never joined to begin with.  The touring handbook is nice, but not worth $45, and as you noted many of us already have towing included with other things like our insurance coverage.  I kept my membership for several years only because I got a nice discount on parts and accessories at the local dealership by showing my card.  If you don't get a HOG discount and you don't participate in actual HOG activities, I don't see much benefit to membership.  Unless you count the handy patches you can use to cover up holes in your jacket or jeans.

The Patches, Pins and Mag's are not worth the 45.00 to me, The one time i had to use it for towing after about 3 or 4 hours of waiting for them to find someone, I had to get someone myself that was about 4 miles from where i was broke down, He was on their list but never called him. And on top of that had to fight with H.O.G. to get my money for the towing.

As an Ex-officer my opinion is biased also, even when I just left on chapter and joined another. If you're one that needs an assembled group to ride with, then HOG is good for that. If your local chapter dealer offers discounts, then HOG is good for that. If you want to help out the local charities that that chapter supports, then once again, HOG is good for that.
Now I ask myself, why did I join because none of the above applies to me.
But as far as the road side assistance goes. Last time I broke down, on a return from Sturgis, AAA could not help. Only aid was HOG. I upgraded to the deluxe coverage.

Renew it, IMO.............

I get more than $100 of discounts at the local HD store for being a HOG member (national $45 and local $20 member). In a years time, it probably saves me $200+.

Plus, $45 is a small pittance when compared to SE bike costs.

If you use the Fly and Ride it's worth the $45
If you get a hog discount your on house money

Well for me, it is worth it.  My wife is the local chapter treasurer.  We also use it at events.

joined in 1986, went life member for $150 in 1991.  I'd say I got my moneys worth,  plus all the great people I've met over the years, and the great friendships I still maintain. (PRICELESS) :apple:
