Can anyone tell me if the cd has to be installed after it was already loaded to operate the nav system. Thank you in advance for any info.

Casper I think the disc only has to be in while you punch in a destination then you can remove it to use the audio cds if you want. Thats how mine works.

That is correct, however the unit needs the nav cd for a moment, while it calculates the route. It may be removed after this and the system will prompt you to enter the cd whenever necessary.

If the newer bikes NAV works like mine, don't plan on finding the H-D dealers right away. So far everytime the directions given has taken me past them or to empty buildings (and that was when it was new in 07).

If HD keeps putting out products like they are, their buildings will be empty as well ......  ::)

After all the bad press on here I was not in a big hurry to get my HD GPS working, but now that I have it and have used it...I LIKE IT.
Is it as user friendly as a touch screen Garmin??...No!
Has it been reliable and accurate??...Yes! (well reliable once they got it to work) :)
Maybe my expectations were so low it has surprised me but I like the fact it cut's out the radio and works through the speakers, I like that there is no ugly mounting bracket or cables.  Like most modern tech pieces I think the more you use it and become familiar, the easier it is to use.
Yea I know it is not as good as a zumo550 but I don't need to worry about a mounting screw, a bracket, a power cord, someone stealing it, packing it or forgetting it at home.
It is there, it is clean, and so far it has been more accurate than the one I use in my truck which again is not saying much because it is a P.O.S..

I have to agree with you.  I've had my bike for 6 months and been without it, and during that time the system has been pretty much trashed on this board.  My expectations were very low, in fact - I was beginning to wonder if the @#$% thing was ever going to work at all!!  Now I've only used it once, for a very short time, but it did what it was supposed to do and was not distracting or difficult to operate.  I've never had any nav system on a motor, and done just fine without it, so any functionality of this unit will be a plus.  I like what I've seen so far.  I probably wouldn't buy it if it hadn't been included in the CVO package, but since I have it, I'll use it when I need to and leave it off the rest of the time.
Now, if the thing arbitrarily goes kaput the next time I try to use it, I take back all of the above!!

......  which is all too often, making it even more useless, and why I use a Zumo 550!

You can take the CD out, BUT the system only remembers the route that was calculated while the CD was in there.  If you veer off the course that's already set in the GPS, you will show "off road" or something like that and get arrows that may or may not help you find your way back on course.  It will only recalculate the route if you have the CD in.  If I'm using the GPS, then I leave the CD in and listen to XM or FM.  The music isn't quite so dynamic, but it gets you through the music fix.  I just got my new NAV module installed a few days ago and I'm planning on giving it a good test today with a few different destinations and some off the planned route detours.  I'll at least see (assuming it's working this time) if it works as a fully functional GPS with the CD in under varying conditions.

That's how you'd THINK it should work, but the reality is somewhat different.  Couple of hundred mile trip, CD in before you set off, calculate the route. When done, remove CD, stick your music CD in, and off you go. Follow the route it gives you and don't be surprised when  - still on the route - Digital Doris pipes up over your music with "Please insert navigation CD". Repeatedly.  >:(

Why couldn't they just stick an SD Card slot in the front of the unit - plenty room after all - to load maps?  Major shortcoming!

What it does do, it does great, and I'd be happy with it if 1) it didn't do the above 2) if you could plan a trip with multiple places en route, and 3) it would use UK/European Zip codes.  Oh, and they are still shipping with V1.0 of the European maps, a fair few years out of date now.

A Zumo is a lot less pain.....

Hi Jim,

When you write "a couple hundred mile", may it be that you have crossed from Scotland into England? Could it be that the system differentiates between the countries? On the other hand, I was going from Frankfurt to Milano via Switzerland, without having to change CD's at all ...

I share your concern about the outdated maps. And it seems there are no newer maps available, even for purchase.

Ride safely,

No, not that Louis.  Just randomly asking for the CD again.  The outdated maps make that worse, too, if a road layout has changed, off it goes again... :(

I will say that with the units short comings, I like the fact that it is one neat package that works fairly well. There have been several times I tried to load an address and it did not recognize it. I would then have to go to an on line maps (when at home) to look for a cross street that the unit would identify. On long trips when I might wander from the planned path I just leave the nav disc in and just listen to the radio, XM or tunes plugged into the aux. I found that certainly help eliminate the frustration of the insert disc prompt.

Had it not come with the CVO package I definitely would never have bought the same for the $$$ amount H-D wants for it. As much as I have considered getting a Zumo with the Kuryakyn gas cap mount, for the most part when I ride I do not care if I get lost, as long as it's not in a crappy neighborhood. Pre planning routes for me takes the fun and adventure out my riding.

Me too - just a shame it has the other shortcomings.
