K&n air cleaner broke
« on: April 26, 2009, 04:27:25 PM »

i just called to order a new air cleaner cover after it hit my right calf and tumbled down the road.  when i got the se dyna home and after going around the block to search for it i realized the center screw and about one inch of metal was missing from the K&n filter.  i'm done with them and the OE is going back on.

Don't give up yet! The OEM element is a POS compared to the K&N and WILL fail the same way as the K&N when improperly installed. From the looks of the picture the screws were overtightened and or not properly spaced. This is evident by the indentation around the mounting screws. Also the OEM element material will get eaten away over time by the oils and fuel that are present in the throttle body

I had a K&N on my 07 do the same thing. The foam gasket on the front of the K&N is not as thick as the OEM and allows the cover to vibrate more. I was lucky enough to catch mine with my knee. If you call K&N they will replace the filter, but be sure to ask them about an extra foam gasket.

Interesting comment - I've never seen an OE air filter do this.  The only air filters that did this were the SE ones with the blue rubber - HD fixed that looooooooong ago.  I'd be very curious to know how manu OE ones you've seen do this.

i called k&n this am and sent a picture.  they are sending a replacement with no questions asked.. great support, but not enough to justify another $230 cover to fly off and bounce down the road.  i had the dealer change my order from the original to the heavy breather.  i hope it stays put.

Many, I have also seen many K&N and Arlen Ness filters with stress cracks around the centers. When the cover is tightened it pulls the center outward and stresses the thin metal, stress cracks appear first, then eventually failure. Also the OEM units that changed from the blue to black surrounds still have the lousy filter medium that breaks down over time from the oil and fuel present.
