Jerry, your logic always helps to return my 'worry wart' side to the center of an issue, but I would really appreciate being able to check the oil level w/o having to deal with the hot dipstick & drips.  Is that worth the new dual readout dipstick?  spyder

Spyder, I was seriously considering one of the new ones myself just for the oil level checking feature, but I heard too many complaints from those who bought them right after they came out.  Then I realized, I very rarely check my oil level hot anymore, since I figured out where the cold full mark was on the old dipstick.  Much easier on the fingers, and the cold oil doesn't drip and run all over the shiny parts like that hot stuff does.  I look at it this way, if the oil level was good when I checked it this morning, then it's good all day long.  Anytime I own a vehicle where that isn't true, that vehicle is going away.

Jerry and Steve make allot of sense on the dipstick matter.  Sorry if that ruins your reputations!  Seriously, sometimes we end up trying to know or fix way too much more than is really necessary.  I thought (there I go again thinking) the gauge was a great idea at the time.  Hell our motors are air cooled and they get real hot, why not know just how hot it is?  But you're right, what is too hot? and what was the plan when the too hot temperature was hit?  Simple just became complicated!  Who would have thought just installing a dipstick would cause me to loose two days of riding?  Don't I loose enough time with the rain and crappy days up here as it is?

OK Jerry and Steve, what else should I take off my scooter that will cause me to loose time?  Last fall I lost the whole long Labor Day weekend due to the TBW going into limp mode as they call it. Took 6 days to get it back with a note telling me "could not duplicate error in house and the MOCO would not authorised any parts that may be related to be replaced".  That was the last of my wife's vacation time for the year.  I'm slowly learning to stop teasing her about her learning to ride this year on her 750 Honda.  The more I tease her about her Little Red Hooter, the worse it gets for me.  I'm learning to keep my big mouth shut but I'm a slow learner. There must be a better substitute word for the "Little Red Hooter" because my shoulder is getting sore from the jabs I keep receiving.  Maybe if her bike just broke down one time I would be off the hook.

Well you guys are certainly correct. Why do most of us insist on fixing things until they are broke? I already ordered the gauge because I am an impulse buyer and I am going to check it out to see if it will hold up to my abuse. It may be for sale so anybody looking for one cheap may get a crack at it. Or it might sit on a shelf with all the other collectables I have bought and never used. Maybe I will put it next to my wifes treadmill that she had to have.  After all my motto is BUY HIGH/SELL LOW. At least thats the way its seems to be going lately.

i had one on my last bike and it was always pinned to the right anyway,,,  just like my air temp gauge.  I live in fla. so what would I expect? I haven't put one in my seeg nor do I plan to. Just another thing to worry about and won't be able to do a thing about it. I really wouldnt want to walk home if it looked too high anyway. I think maintaining the bike should help keep it running properly.  Oh, and an oil cooler should help too,   don'tcha think?
