Tire patch?
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:31:58 PM »

I have a newish (100 miles) Avon AM 23 tire with a nail.  It is off the rim, and I'd like to patch it.  Any recommendations?

Not trying to be a smart@$$, but there are only two tires between you and the road.... replace the tire.

Replace it...  It's not worth the chance.  Downside is big, right?

I just went through this two weeks ago. I had a nail in a new tire that I hoped could be saved. I called some local shops and most were willing to patch the tire and send me on my way. Then I asked the advice of my fellow CVO owners and everyone had the some response, change the tire.  $300 and two weeks later I have a new tire and piece of mind. I know if I patched the tire I be thinking about that tire everytime I went for a ride.

Only patch/plug to get you to a new tire, then change it.

I agree.  Patch and plug to the nearest dealer for a new tire.

Not worth the risk.

What about putting a tube in the tire?  My wife just picked up a nail in her Dyna which has spoke rims which has a tube anyways.  They just replaced the tube.  Any reason you could not put a tube with other rims?

Stop & Go or if'n you don't want the tire send it to me   :2vrolijk_21:

If you check the Stopngo website and look at their FAQ section, they say that safety experts and they themselves do not recommend their plugs as a permanent fix for street tires and they suggest replacing the tire at the earliest possible time.  They say it's okay on ATV's for a permanent fix, but again, not for street tires.

I'm with everyone else on this one.  Replace the tire and have peace of mind.  You have 2 points of contact with the pavement on a bike...that's your 2 good tires.  If one of them goes, the 3rd point of contact with the pavement is you.  REPLACE the tire!

I ran a plugged tire for 10K plus miles.....couldn't find it in my heart to through away a brand new tire just because of a nail hole.  Paid someone to do the good plug (hot?) and it was as good as new.....it depends on where the hole is as to whether or not it compromises the integrety of the tire (so I was informed).  The dealership will not be any part of this type of repair due to liability and of course selling new tires.  ??? har!  spyder
