I picked up Kaspr last night and I had my service writer come with me to start the bike. When I went to start it it almost didn't start but it fired right up. They did some more tuning on the motor this time in and my therory is that the ACR[s were not working and they discovered that and made sure they are on and would not admit that to me because that would make them look stupid because I have been all over them on this start issue and they had been assuring me that there dyno tech had turned them back on before.Yea Right!! This morning it started right up when I left for work so we will see how long this will last. Kaspr is running really good and I would love to put that start issue behind me!! By the way Harley has come up with a new process to touch up paint on the powder coated motors. They will be doing that next time I'm in the shop. Right now there is a learning/training curve to master that process. I guess the paint brush touchup is not working on the powder coating(You Think)

Here's a different take on the starting issue.  Like Napalm's issue that started this thread, my SERG started making horrible noises upon starting and would take two to four tries to start.  At 5K miles, my starter clutch disintegrated.  Dealer that did the repair said ACR's were functioning fine.   The starting problem persisted.  When I mentioned this to a friend, he said he'd heard the problem might be to overfilling the gas tank.   :nixweiss:

The owner's manual says not to overfill but does not say why.  I assumed it was so you did not spill which I now think is only half right.  I was told to look at your parts or service manual.  There is a venting system in the gas tanks which is supposed to dump fumes into a receptacle and eventually back into the motor.  Overfilling the tank clogs this venting system which then dumps too much gas into the bike upon starting.   So, if your anal like me and try to get every drop of gas into your tank, try to stop.  I did.  The SERG is starting fine now.   :nixweiss:

With a half tank my bike still sounds like a bucket of bolts when I try to start. It goes to the dealer next week. I'll get back to everyone after they look at it.

I've had starting issues for a while, backfire, noisy, etc,. Jim, hd-dood, could'nt duplicate it but took starter off while doing other engine work. The starter clutch ass. (2nd one) worked, but was real tight, something about the bearings. Put in a new one and starts like a champ now.

If that were the case, wouldn't the bike start okay as you have less gas in the tank?  Mine did it whether I filled it the entire way or part way, and did it whether I was close to needing to fill up or just after filling up.  I had my starter replaced and that only helped for a day or so.  When I had the ACR's replaced, I haven't had any more problems.

I'm pretty sure my problem is my ACR but I also think it has screwed up my starter by now.

Chances are you are going to need both.  I got the ACR's done before the new starter was destroyed like the first one.

Greg, you Cali guys have a carbon cannister evaporative emissions system that the rest of us don't have.  Just like with cars, which all have evap emissions systems, overfilling the fuel tank can "flood" the carbon cannister when the fuel in the tank expands and tries to vent.  In the 49 state bikes the excess fumes and fuel just get dumped on the ground and wouldn't affect starting.

When they tune a bike on the dyno do they turn off the ACR? I'm just wondering if they did on my bike and never turned it back on. I'm having another dealer look at it so I will know Tuesday.

I don't think the dealer turns off the ACR's, but I do believe that certain base maps that are downloaded will turn them off.  At least that's my understanding.  They should be checking to make sure they are turned back on as a final step.  At least that's the shallow understanding that I have gained.  They do turn off the knock sensors to dyno tune.

Looks like the Dealer delivering the bike shut off the ACR when they installed the race tuner. It screwed up the starter and the clutch gear. Parts will be in Friday. When this other dealer truned in the ACR the bike starts so much better even with the bad gears.

Interesting thread.....thanks for all the info. I have a question, does my 06 streetglide have the ACRs ? I've done 95 kit, SEheads,SERT,cams and plenty of other stuff, I also have the manual compression release buttons that I don't usually use unless its hot......occasionally it doesn't start on the first try and makes a godawful sound that sounds like what some of you guys are trying to explain. Am I heading the right direction here or should i be using my manual buttons every time I start. ? Thanks in advance...... Jon

Unless for some reason you got some heads from a (CVO) 110 I wouldn't think you'd have the ACR's I don't remember them on anything other then those, and I doubt you'd have both. :nixweiss: Since you do have the manual compression releases it would probably be better for your motor if you used them all the time to make it easier on your starter. Once you get in the habit of using them all the time you'll never forget and not use them when the motor is hot.
