Air Filter for an '06 SEUC
« on: May 07, 2009, 05:58:13 PM »

I was checking over my A/C for the preseason and found that this bike (new to me) has an after market A/C like a K&N but it is dry (no red oil on it). I am wondering if this is a cheap knock off filter or is it part of the stage one kit.  This bike has Rush mufflers and a SERT so I am thinking this is not the factory A/C.

Please advise

Does it look like the attachment?  If it does, it is the Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner kit and the knock-off washable paper filter.  If you have taken the filter element completely loose, check the rubber gasket where it seals against the backing plate very carefully for torn or "rotted" material.  Also check the paper filter material for holes and tears as well.  Both issues were widespread back in '05-'06.

If you wish to keep the back plate but get a better filter, the real K&N filter would be a good choice.  The K&N number is HD-0800, and you can get one directly from K&N or from most online motorcycle stores.  Do a google search for HD-0800.

If you plan to use the stock SEUC air cleaner cover, you need to make a minor modification to provide full support for the cover no matter what round filter element you use.  Temporarily mount the filter element into the cover with the center bolt and then note the gap between the end of the filter and the cover at both the front and the rear.  This gap needs to be filled so that the cover is properly supported and won't wobble.  Otherwise, vibration and movement can eventually break out the weld nut in the filter element.

Thanks so much.  I believe that this is the one I have but I thought it was black not blue.  Should I get a better one like the K&N.  I have them in my cars/truck.  If I were to change over to the K&N would I have to redo the dyno on the bike?  Are there any other filters I should look at?  I like the look of the H-D heavy breather but I don't think it will fit with the lowers.

I do not like the non oiled paper filter and I already know how well the K&N's work and can be cleaned.  I am just wondering if there if more to gain from a different filter all together.

Topper, I would definitely get the real K&N and take that cheaply made knockoff and throw it in the weeds.  As a matter of fact, that is exactly what I did several years ago after buying the SE kit and finding not a K&N like the ones I had previously, but the Chinese version H-D found to cut their costs and increase their profit margin.  Mine showed rot after just a few thousand miles while I was waiting for my K&N.  It is unlikely that you would need to retune, since the air cleaner isn't the real bottleneck.  If you upgrade the throttle body and cylinder heads, then you may want to look for a higher flow air cleaner and do a complete tune.

BTW, the SE washable paper elements came with blue "rubber" gaskets which were changed somewhere along the way to black.  The first ones fell apart if you just looked at them a little to hard, the "upgraded" material lasted a little longer but still had a tendency to fall apart.  Both versions also had a bad habit of developing holes in the actual filter paper.

I use a Zippers "Max Flow" K&N filter that is deeper for more air inlet than the SE, But, As Jerry noted above using the stock CVO football shape cover, Install HD service gasket P/N 29591-99 This allows the stock cover to fit properly.

That gasket # will "FILL IN THE GAP" for the OEM/MOCO cover?

I used that gasket successfully on my 06 for over two years with no issues.  Just put a dab of blue loctite on the main nut holding the cover onto the filter and you'll be good to go.  Like the others have said, I'd go with the 0800 K&N...it won't stick out further and touch you knee, and you'll get enough air flow with it unless you start playing with the motor.

An alternative to the K&N HD-0800, which offers 340 cfm, alot of "growing room," and will fit the SE back plate is Bob Wood's KF325, which is made for Wood by K&N Engineering.  Check it out at http://www.woodcarbs.com/air.htm.  Have one on the Green Bike.  You'll need to lose the stock A/C cover and go with something like the H-D Nostalgic A/C cover or one of Bob's A/C covers.
