I was checking over my A/C for the preseason and found that this bike (new to me) has an after market A/C like a K&N but it is dry (no red oil on it). I am wondering if this is a cheap knock off filter or is it part of the stage one kit. This bike has Rush mufflers and a SERT so I am thinking this is not the factory A/C.
Please advise

Does it look like the attachment? If it does, it is the Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner kit and the knock-off washable paper filter. If you have taken the filter element completely loose, check the rubber gasket where it seals against the backing plate very carefully for torn or "rotted" material. Also check the paper filter material for holes and tears as well. Both issues were widespread back in '05-'06.
If you wish to keep the back plate but get a better filter, the real K&N filter would be a good choice. The K&N number is HD-0800, and you can get one directly from K&N or from most online motorcycle stores. Do a google search for
HD-0800.
If you plan to use the stock SEUC air cleaner cover, you need to make a minor modification to provide full support for the cover no matter what round filter element you use. Temporarily mount the filter element into the cover with the center bolt and then note the gap between the end of the filter and the cover at both the front and the rear. This gap needs to be filled so that the cover is properly supported and won't wobble. Otherwise, vibration and movement can eventually break out the weld nut in the filter element.
