ceramic coated head pipe temperatures
« on: June 04, 2009, 08:11:45 AM »

has anyone recorded actual temperature readings as far as the difference between the cat head pipe, non-cat head pipe, and non-cat ceramic coated head pipe...I am wanting to get my new head pipe coated, but is it worth the $$ that I will be spending.  I do think that having the non-cat pipe will help with the temperatures next to the transmission and the back of my foot, but does it actually make a difference that is measurable?

Don't waste your money.Spoke with steve at fullsac the other day and he exspressed that it was a waste of money to have it coated. Take your money and buy a tts tuner that will work the best.

Just be prepared to live with the ugly blued pipe reflections off the cam and transmission covers. Some modifications are not exclusively for performance gains.

Yes, some changes are to better the overall experience and look of the bike.  I strongly dislike blued pipes.

Silver heat paint high temp works to take care of the reflection in the covers.  Doc

My 2 cents, based on my D&D 2-1 pipes, head pipes Jet Hot coated silver.

I believe anyone who thinks they can feel a difference either in perceived temperature reductions or performance gains is smoking crack.

Going to the 2-1 put a header pipe one pipe closer my wife's foot and she is complaining about the heat.
I don;t like the heat either. Have to be aware now when putting the bike on the kick stand that I do allow my right leg to lean against the rear pipe.

I was looking - hoping for a temperature reduction which I did not get. My main purpose for getting the coating was to eliminate the bluing - multi hue reflections in the chrome.

That I got - no bluing. But I am not sure which I like better, the multi shades of reflective shiny blue to gold of the heat discoloration or the dull silver reflection that makes the chrome covers look dirty.

If you are thinking about it I would look at some bikes that have had it done and make a personal decision instead of what the "others" are doing.

Would I do it again? Not sure. But at least it is not that expensive.

For sure the D&D's get hot, move the heat right up to the passenger and will fry your leg (and rainsuit) if you not carefull.

But they do add high end power to the bike (and didn't hurt the low end)  and are way to loud even with the "quiet" baffles.

My 07 had 101 HP and 11 ft-lbs of torque.  Albeit with a few mods and help from the Lazano brothers tuning shop.

Sure would run. :orange: :orange:

it reduces the temp some. but when your talking from 900 to 550 or so its still hot and thats not near the exhaust port. has got to help the velocity some. the looks are the best benefit though. i had my black supertrapp headpipe  done and they look even better.

it seems the chrome makes my temp gun vary.

I have used this product (Jet Hot Extreme Sterling) on my hot rods headers with excellent results. I have had my non-cat exhaust pipe and crossover pipe done for my "09" SE Ultra and will be installing soon, along with TTS Mastertune, and SE aircleaner. I have been taking temperatures of the stock engine exhaust pipes and catalytic converter with  surface mounted thermocouples and a digital recording thermometer and will post my before and after results soon. One note, as I suspected, the cat location has given the highest temps, over 1000 degrees with normal driving. I have just completed my 1K service and will get some more temps this weekend with some more aggressive driving in factory stock form.

Tom, looking at Jet-Hot also. Can't wait to read your test results.
