Can anyone tell me what this is?
« on: June 14, 2009, 09:09:45 AM »

I am in the process, thanks in part to this great website,of installing 1 3/4 Fulsac baffles along with a Power commander v w/ auto tune when i came across this inside my headpipe when I removed the right side exhaust pipe.
Not only am I not sure what it is but do I need to  reinstall this when i reassemble?

It looks like an expanding pipe plug to me.  Does the green rubber-looking part expand when you turn the acorn nut clockwise?  If that is indeed what it is (or for that matter not what it is), I have no idea why it would have been inside your headpipe.  Regardless, I would NOT put it back in there.

Looks like an expandable plug (turn the nut, the two metal ends will be drawn together and the center section will expand to plug a cylinder or hole).  I've used something similar in the past to plug openings in fuel tanks while I was coating the interiors.  It isn't something that should have been in your headpipe.  What is the history of this bike, purchased used or new, pipes ever been off before, etc.?  I could see where someone would use something like that to plug one end of a pipe and then pour in a liquid coating.  There are coatings sold to supposedly retain and reflect the heat so the outer surface doesn't blue as badly.  However, it shouldn't be left in the pipe.  I'm surprised you didn't have some serious driveability issues.

That's the stopper from your tub. Put it back before the wife finds out you're using her stuff again.

yea I know it looks like a tool left in the exhaust from the builder and upon further investigation, which isnt to hard to see,the right side baffle is like brand new 700 miles and the left side shows rust and use.
So along with the new catalytic free head pipe and the Fullsac baffles this bike will be running much better.

your bike will certainly run better without the unwanted obstruction blocking half the system

Looks like someone had a wild idea and used a 'BUTT' plug to make a two into one exhaust.  I think the plug is better off up the inventors 'you know what"  :confused5:

this picture shows how I found this plug in the exhaust and I just finished up with the Fullsac baffles replacement and installing the power commander v w/auto tune.
So that adventure is done and the bike fired right up and seems to running alot cooler and smother.

I can see how it would now be running cooler and smoother. It looks like someone wanted to expand the pipe for better seal, and then forget the tool inside. I'd hate to think that it was installed like that for a reason. I'm surprised the bike ran at all.

This bike had to have a crossover pipe or how did this bike run?

and how did this not do damage to the top end?
