Lost Dog in the Mt Sinai, NY area - FOUND!!!
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:06:10 PM »

My sister's long haired whippet got out yesterday and there has been no sign of her.  Her and family/friends have been out all day and night yesterday and today.  If anyone in the area sees this dog, please pick her up and contact me.  Her name is Emmy and she is very friendly.  Thank you.

Very sorry to read this Ernie.  The IG's like mine and the Whippets aren't the brightest things when it comes to road sense.  And bar the door if they see a rabbit or a squirrel because nothing else will stop them.  So you have to hope some good Samaritan found the dog and got it inside safe waiting to be found.  Good luck.

She must have been picked up by someone and taken there.  I can't imagine her going 30 miles in 2 days on her own.  Doesn't matter.  All that matters is that she is home!

What were the circumstances of her discovery that far from home Ernie?  That's a long way for such local news to travel.  People see signs or some other bit of very good fortune on the pooch's behalf?

What we beleive happened is that someone picked her up on their way to Splish-Splash, a water park about 15-20 miles from the house.  The dog then got out and was picked up by animal control there and brought to the pound, which contacted my sister since the dog has my sister's info tatooed inside her rear leg.

Then a job well done in both preventative care and by the animal control officers.  Dizzy is "chipped" for the same unfortunate possibility.  Really glad to read the good news.  Thanks.

I hear ya Don.  Unfortunately with chips, there are several different ones and none of them work with any others.  Then you have to hope that the place that has the dog has the correct reader and actually uses it.  You'd be amazed how many have the equipment but don't make the effort to actually check the animals.  With a tattoo, all they have to do is have the ability to read English (which I know can be a stretch nowadays).

That's exactly what I was informed of; about a year after the installation.  Different standards for the hardware and readers and a lack of universal training in shelters.  Pissed me off a bit.  Got the dog inked too then.  That's what had been done with pets before.  But the chip idea just seemed so cool.  Yeah, right.....
