This may be the most vivid photo of the problem we've seen yet . . .

Not so apparent here, possibly due to the shadow . . .

2up, please understand I mean this in sympathy with what you're having to go through and not to demean; but especially in that saddlebag photo; that looks like crap man.  Looks like it got washed with dirty wash water and that soapy dirty water was left to dry.

I understand it looks bad! Can you believe one of the guys at the dealership said he couldn't see any problem.

Looks to me like it's a problem with the multi-colored and striped pieces.  On all these pics we've seen, the inside of the fairing and the saddlebag lids seem fine.  Move on to the other pieces and the milky look appears.  Based upon a couple of major paint wrecks that i've caused it seems to be a problem between various color applications where a light clear coat is used to stabilize the various layers.  My guess would be that the interim coats were not cured before the heavier final clear coat.  If that the case, all the buffing in the world is not going to reach deep enough to effect the problem layer.

With all this talk of buffing has anyone actually done the obvious?  I mean get a good light and look not just at it but through it?  You get at the right angles and you can see through the clear to the color coat on a cc/bc paint job.  So you ought to be able to see at what depth is the problem on these parts.

I drop my bike off at the dealership Saturday for them to look at the paint. I just pick it up today as he kept it to let his service mgr look at it.  The service Mgr. said that he did see a problem with the color match between the inter and outer fairing, the crimson flakes on mine is basely non-existence on the outer fairing and the inter is abundant which is what makes the color not match on mine. (My guess). Same on the bags, Fender and Tank.  The service mgr told me that VERY IMPORTANT is to LOG a CALL and GET A REFERANCE # that way you are in their system.  It does not matter how much you BITCH to the dealer you have to file a complaint with customer service at Harley…Did all of that still dont know the out come as of yet????????

Well I took my bike back to my Dealer today to show them the problem with the paint!  ((( I used a trailer,, so ezz guys!!)))   I got a flashlight to show them the milky look of the bags,, front fairing and tank. She told me she would call Harley,, and I told her they would prob tell her,, that they knew nothing of a paint problem.  So she called,, talked to someone who transferred her to someone else,, and after she got off the phone,, I was told,, that they DO KNOW there is a problem.  Now,, from the horses mouth,, since I have seen many explanations as to why the bikes have this milky color to them is..............
  The problem is caused by TOO MUCH clearcoat,, and the reason is,,  they applied extra layers,, so you couldnt feel the hand painted lines between the different colors of  paint  on the outside of the fairing,,  the tank,, the bottom of the bags,, and the fenders!!  I dont know about everyone elses,,  but the tops of my bags are fine,, and so is the inside of the fairing,,  BECAUSE,,  they only have 1 color of paint on them!!!   If you think about it,, it makes sense!!!
  So,,,  the next thing she told me they asked her to do,, was to take the bike to GOOD painter,, like to an auto paint shop,, and see if the could buff some of the clearcoat off.  She wanted to know if I would ok them to do that.  I asked her,,  if she had a $36K bike,,, would she want them to do that to hers,, or have them give her all new tins???  She understood what I was asking her. Anyways,, to make this short,  I told her I wanted the paint to be RIGHT!!!  It is fine with me to send it out of house,, so to speak,, to see if they can do something with the paint.  She said the would send 1 bag out,,  have them see if they could do anything with it,, and we would go from there.  She said HD would certainly be glad to give me new tins,, ~IF~  the buffing didnt get the bike,, back to where it should have been in the first place.  So I left the bike at the Dealer,, and they even let me leave my TRAILER there at the OWNERS home,,  waiting for the REP to take a look at the problem,, and that is the rest of the story for now............
   So EVERYONE have a WONDERFUL,,,  MERRY  CHRISTMAS,,,  and if you want me to bottle up some of this WHITE STUFF outside,, and send it to you,,  just let me know !!!!
     ~~~ sorry my post was so long~~~~
Wow sounds like your dealer got to someone in the know.  Not a painter but sounds like a good explaination of the problem,  now wonder if they will change the number of clear coats?
This is the most plausible explanation so far, especially if they just tried to apply additional coats wet-on-wet.  The proper way to do this is to cure and then carefully wet sand and polish the first coat to reduce the ridge left by the graphics, then add the second coat (and third if required).  They also have to be careful to not build up to much total paint film, or the paint can crack in cold climates.
I've also been told that the non-metal parts (fairing and saddlebags, esp.) have much less clear painted over the color.  I guess this is due to material 'flex' that metal doesn't have to much degree.  Don't know if this is why we haven't had the problem w/ the earlier CVO's that had the handpaiinted graphics also, but just another variable in the equation.  [smiley=confused5.gif]  spyder
