By way of an update, my HD rep called today. He told me the factory said they lookd at a new bike they had there and it was the same as mine...so they figure it is suppose to be that way.

"It's supposed to look like that....They're all like that.....That's just the way they're made....That's perfectly normal....."

I bet many of us have heard this attitude about some defective new product we've bought

This is perhaps (IMO) the biggest insult yet to the customer's intelligence.

Please bare with my vast lack fo knowledge in the painting arena, but reading thru this post and taking into consideration of what has been expressed by the members with the bikes, the dealers and the HD people. I remembered seeing in "the birth of a cvo" tread that the new bike in the crate had a [highlight]protective layer of tape or paper on it in the areas described to have the problems. Could this be a chemical reaction between the adhesive on the paper and the curing of the clearcoat? [/highlight]That would explain how the problem appears to get by so many people and then is noticed by the owner. Again I'm by no means an expert in any of this stuff, just an observation. I hope everything works out well for all those involved and I'll wish everyone a merry christmas while I'm here.
hdhiwayman,

If the wrong type of material was used, it could definitely affect the paint.  Been there, done that in the auto business.  Most of the import auto manufacturers, and some of the domestics, use a material called "Rap-Gard" which was developed by a Japanese company to protect paint during shipment.  This is a special white plastic film and adhesive that was specifically designed to not damage the paint.  Cheap substitutes have been known to cause softening and discoloration (like I said, been there, done that.   [smiley=oops.gif] )  In this case, however, I think the issue is being created in the actual paint process.  If it was something as simple as the protective material, I have to believe that even the MoCo (or their paint supplier) would have figured it out by now.  They are losing a significant amount of production over this, not to mention the hit to their customer relations.  JMHO

Well I just got off phone with the MoCo company and why does it surprise me that they said that they have not heard of any paint problems… [smiley=nixweiss.gif]…….At first he was nice but forceful saying that out of the paint QC dept the assembly QC dept, he just could not believe that this could happen and that The HD dealership inspected the bike when they received it. And then the filial inspection ME Why didn’t you catch it…  [smiley=confused5.gif]…..I guess transferring all the blame to me. He said don’t you think that if there was bad paint that that many people would catch it >:(….So there must be nothing wrong with the paint it is probably something else….Light or something.  I told him about this site and how that there is a lot of Black & Slate owners that have paint problems.   His answer was well nobody that he as heard of has reported this to HD.  When I went off on him he finely decided to log a call and he gave me a ref # so now I have to take my scooter back to the dealership for them to look at the paint.
LET THE GAMES BEGAIN……….
So if any of you want to call this guy and tell him that there is BAD PAINT he is at
1-414-3434056 then  4  then   4   then 3    HIS NAME IS    [highlight][/highlight]JOHN
I have had several calls with your friend John. Here is the deal with my bike.
I'm taking the bike to Fl. for vacation. When I get back in early Jan. the dealer is taking all of the painted parts off the bike and sending them back to the MoCo. so they can "fix" them. Hmmmm.....I wonder what the hell that means?

Now for another installment of "As the Wheels Turn"...

So I start thinking. Every Black and Slate is wrong, but they are all the SAME wrong. The paint is bad on the same pieces on all the bikes. Hence the delay. During the delay I figure the moco had a big meeting about what to do. Some brilliant guy came up with, "If they ALL look like that, just say we WANTED them to look like that...who will know" And there you have it.

Now, with that said, I think at some point this issue will be resolved. We are all upset. There are owners who have their bike and do not even know they have an issue yet. I read a post here that read something like, "...after reading the posts here I examined my bike in good light and the colors are different!" We are not talking sportys here...these are CVO's and we are CVO owners. A class action suit would allows us contact information for all owners of this model, and I am sure that we can get the moco to deal with us. They are a publicly traded company, class action suits do not sit well with stock holders.

Anyway....after contemplating all that and remember the years I have been saying, "If they ever come out with an SE Ultra, I'll buy it"  I told my stealer I am taking it...bad paint and all.

I can not tell you how unhappy he is! He DOES NOT want me to buy that bike. I know he has buyers at 6 grand over MSRP. Now the stealer is trying to talk me out of buying a bike from him. Now THAT is even MORE reason to buy it. Almost worth spending 40 grand to keep him from making another 6!

Worst case..I have the best painter in the world....if the moco don't fix it...he will. What is an extra grand or so to have what you want..I WANT THIS.

I'll keep ya all posted

SE_Ultra remember this is a Factory Warrenty Paint issue any authorized dealer could help with this issue if they chose and may get another customer. Reading post under High Res Pics it didn't look like Glide Boy has ant paint issue. So if the MOCO say they all look like ours does lets point out to them the members of this site that have good paint jobs. If we start looking at Vin #s I think we will find a pattern regarding the the bad painted bikes. My dealer still states he will get me new paint from the MOCO? "I'll keep you posted"
Don't forget to log your complaint

I posted this under Hauled her home, but here it is again, the sun is out today so I am gonna take some pics to post, as you guys will see the paint in the sun light looks jet black and seems to all match, but you guys look at it, I will tell you this if you look close you can see the problems  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

any way here is my post

Well after reading all the posts on paint Problems, I went out last night and took a better look at mine, and chit if I don't have the same problems, under the light I saw the milky clear and right by the inner and outer fairing there is a line where the good paint meets the bad paint. lids are also a different color then the bags, I can't belive I did not notice this before. I went to the dealer today and was told by the service Mgr, to bring it in and he will take pics and send them to the motor company, he also told me that with 06 bike they will replace all the bad paint with good , we will see. Dam I am pissed.

good luck with your new ride....... ride safe and enjoy

We stopped at the dealer today to check out the paint on my buddies Crimson/Slate Ultra.
It was in the service area on a lift waiting to be prepped. The only lighting was the shop flourescent lighting. All looked good except for a few minor scratches on saddlebags and a few specs in the silver striping in the fairing. Could not see any hazing or milkiness in the black paint.

We'll see how it looks in the sunlight... Seems alot of you discovered the paint flaws in the sun, even though all looked good in the showroom. Is that correct?

He's taking delivery Tuesday afternoon.

Take care,

Grover

I was out washing mine and the faring is not the only issue!!! [smiley=confused5.gif] I have attached pics of the bags and the faring.  I don't understand what is happening.  The paint is getting worse day by day.  My dealer agreed to replace the fairing no questions asked.  I hope they have the same attitude when I show them the bags.

 SEGG06,

Oh my goodness, the pics you attached really show what everyone has been talking about.
I hope your dealer does the right thing and gets this paint issue resolved.

What I am starting to see is the MoCo has a big issue and they need to communicate to their dealers and end users (us)  ASAP

I continue to look at my Autumn Haze and so far I haven't seen this issue, you can bet if I do the MoCo will hear about quickly.

I am so sorry that all of the 2006 FLHTCUSE owners are having to deal with this issue.
