Saw my first "Watermelon" on Friday while I was at the stealer.  Nice lookin' scoot, but the paint on the saddlebags didn't match the lids... what a shame!!!  I own a small business and have the firm conviction that if you're gonna do somethin'... DO IT RIGHT!!!
I can't believe QC lets these bikes of the line to get crated up.  What's up with that?

Here lies the problem with MoCo and some Dealers they have gotten to big and have the attitude if one customer will not buy it, there are ten lined up behind them that will. This has been proven by a thread (forget which one it was, and it may even be this one) here where a dealer took back a FLHTCUSE and told the original buyer that he wasn't going to try to get paint issue resolved as he could sell bike as is. :o Bad enough for a dealer to think that, but to say it IMHO he should have his dealership taken away from him.

I sure hope they mean that they're not replacing anymore parts until they know what is causing the problem.

Ok, let me get this right.... "Sorry Sir, we are no longer replacing any pieces on those bikes." Somebody please tell me that they aren't talking about the 2006 FLHTCUSE? [smiley=confused5.gif] This really brings truth to my previous post. I just hope you got that persons name to give to your lawyer. As you stated that is "unservice". :o

I think it might be time to start taping these calls (BTW you have to tell them that it is being recorded).

Black Candy Chrimson 2006! I got her name (customer Service) and the name of the Low-Life shop painting these bikes. Caliber is the shop, and if anyone knows of these guys, please stop by and let them know they're going down. The Customer Un-Service person put me on hold while she called them, then tried to tell me everything I found out from the Mid-Year show. They know what the problem is, and so do we, 12 coats of clear on the multi colored pieces, 3 coats on the solid pieces. The owner of the dealership said he will take it to a higher level. I trust him and his word, just want my bike to look right, simple as that. Not too happy here is California right now.

I hope they mean not until they figure out how to do it right, but I have a feeling that what they really mean is "We don't know how to paint these things to eliminate this issue, so we have decided that what you have is the way we intended it to be in the first place.  Therefore, there is no defect".
I read somewhere in one of these threads that the difference was blamed on the number of coats of clear, with 12 coats on the parts with striping and only 3 on the single color parts.  I personally don't believe that, but if that is their excuse I have an easy fix for them.  Paint the single color parts with 12 coats of clear also.  This way the parts will match, even though the metallic will be almost invisible.

I certainly hope that the MoCo will step up and do the right thing for you folks.  If they don't, I see a class action lawsuit in the making.

May be to harsh on Caliber I,ve called them wanting to know when my  painted parts would be done. I was told they only paint metal, fenders and tank . The plastic parts are painted by the  HD in tomahawk if that true they don,t deserve the bad rap--AK

That actually also lays more of the blame at HD's door Andy.  One thing I had wondered is just what the mix was; who painted what, and where.  Had wondered if bag lowers and bag uppers were painted separately and if this might help account for why no one was ever seeing the problem during production.

From what you're saying, however, upper and lower saddlebags and inner and outer fairings will all have been done by Harley.  So everything that is bad is coming from Harley.  And the tanks and fenders that I don't remember anyone complaining about are coming from the outside vendor.

Why am I not surprised...

One thing for sure though.  If Harley's stance is now that no parts are to be replaced than the absolute response for anyone waiting to pick up a bike has to be that it's perfect at day of delivery or it don't get paid for.  No room for any screwing around anymore.

I dont understand this 12 coat thing, I have 2 custom bikes that have 10 coats of clear and 3 coats of color, NONE of this cloudy BS on either of them, I talked with eagle art who painted both bikes and was told it made NO SENSE to them, the more clear the deeper the paint should look, They did say that each layer must be dry and buffed color sanded before the next layer goes on.....

I am posting this pic just to show what 10 coats should look like. I dont buy this BS, I think they did something wrong while they painted the parts or used bad paint.    End of Story,

Just fix it the right way....... >:(

From what I have been told by other painters your are correct.  There is sanding that needs to take place when adding each coat of the clear.  My thoughts, MOCO wants these bikes out the door as fast as they can and the painter did not take the time to do this right the first time.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I hate to hear of so many paint problems. On the other hand, my only problem seems to be the bug guts I keep finding all over my fairing!  8-)
