May have some news about the paint problems.  I'm at P.O.T. (HOG Primary Officer Training) this weekend and Jim McCaslin, President & COO, and Steve Phillips, Director of Quality, for the MOCO are here.  I personally spoke to Steve about the paint issue and yes they are well aware of it.  He said the problem is specifically the thicknness of the clear coat on the saddlebags which as we all know is thicker (about 14 mils he said) so as to smooth out the lines from the decals.  Specific fix - they are working (with 3M I think he said) on special buffer and materials to take down the clearcoat or if necessary will replace the saddlebags with new ones with thinner clearcoat.  So there is hope!  I've met and talked to Steve on several occassions before and he is a good guy.  If he says it I'm confident he'll make it happen.

Thats nice and thank you for the update. Buffing will not work, AND it is not just the lower bags, it is the tank, fenders, outer fairing, etc...including the bags , it is ALL of the striped parts that are milky. Havent we established this with them by now??.

 [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I picked up my 2006 Screaming Eagle Ultra weeks ago and as I started to ride with the sun out I noticed that the bike was actually several colors.  The tops of the saddle bags are loaded with red metal flack as is the inner fairing.  The gas tank has less and the front fairing and the fenders have much less.  The clear coat does appear to be milky.  I just had my 1,000 mile service done and mentioned it to my dealer.  They stated that paint was my problem since I did not bring it up when I bought the bike...told me to call HD Service.  I did and spoke to a lady who gave me a case number and stated that they do have some clear coat issues.  They requested that the dealer send in pictures for determination of the problem.

I toured the York Plant last Monday, April 5th and the green SE Ultra they have on display in the tour center has obious quality issues...tour pack is gapped....and the gas tank is milky in color...does not match the rest of the bike.    this is how I discovered there are problems.

I hope that HD does step to the plate and resolves the paint issue.

I haven't followed this thread that closely, so I don't know the total history on your paint issues,  and what you all have tried but I have seen the pictures, and I recently splashed some gas on the my tank, and had these milky spots in the purple paint, didn't think I could ever get them out well, my dealer left this bottle of  "GS-1 color restorer, black/red" when they touched up my bike at home, so I gave it a try, worked like a miracle and you would never know they were there now, it really gave the color more depth, after that  I gave it a coat of wax and it looks better than when it was delivered!  yo! get some, give it a try, it may restore the color for you too [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

2up,
If they are like the ones they showed me they do look better than what came with the cycle but not 100% and that is what I told them.  Waiting for the fix a this point. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I'm like you I won't take it if it dosen't look the way it is supposed to. They are probably sending the same set you looked at. Wonder who will get to look at them next?

Well, same old story from MoCo. I am taking my bags to the dealer for wet color sanding/buffing. The service manger (ex body shop owner-35 years) told MoCo this will not work but we have to jump thru the hop! Why is Harley spending all this money for a fix that they know does not work [smiley=nixweiss.gif]???????? I have had nothing but Harley's since 1977, remained loyal thru the AMF years :'( and now I and others are being treated like this. It is all about the bottom line with the CEO now! NO concern for customers buying their most expense, elite Harley to date.

I knew it was called "Good Friday" for a reason.  This is better than good news if it works.

Thanks for the update 2up. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=beerchug.gif] [smiley=bigok.gif]

If you look in the Job Opportunities section on the Harley web  site, It seems that they are hiring paint engineers and supervisors at the plant in York. HMMMMMM? I wonder why? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
