Tank Emblem-Harley Davidson Metal Script Coming Off
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:20:42 AM »

On my 09 SERG the metal tank emblem that is on each side of the  tank has a sharp point on each end of it and on mine they stick out just slightly.  The one on the left side has been catching on my jeans while I ride and it's bent outward.  The others are out enough that I'm sure they will catch a sponge or towel when I clean it.
   I'm getting ready to take it into the dealer to see what they say but I wondered if anyone else had this problem or noticed it.

Yep, it's been talked about here. You're not alone. Poor design if you ask me. Despite my caution when washing and drying the tank I've started catching my jeans on the left rear point as of recently. Time will tell if it breaks.

Solved my problem with this issue by removing the script on both sides. Much cleaner and I would not replace it if I could, now.

Same problem here, as well. Left side gets caught on jeans/pants. Will try to post a picture when I get home tonight....I had not thought of taking off the tank completely....did you use fishing line and WD40?

20 gauge.  Would like to know how you took it off and see the pics too.  I snag mine everytime I wipe the bag down.  Right side only and then I remember for the left side.  Poor design.

This is all interesting.  My dealer hadn't heard of it but was going to order me a new piece, but maybe I'd be better off just removing it.  20 gauge, any chance you could post a picture of it without the script?

One end of mine (the pointy thingy) didn't have any tape behind it from day one...just sticking out there.  I'm sure it's just a matter of time before it gets ripped off with a towel.

 That's the problem with mine, no tape under it where it got bent out.

Sorry for my delay in responding and my technological deficiencies as far as posting pictures is concerned. Yes, fishing line and Goop remover.

Thanks 20 gauge.  Do you have any pics?  Did you just run the fishing line between the tank and the emblem, and if so, it must be held on by adhesive?  Is the goop remover ok on the paint?  Probably dumb questions, but with a bike like this, I'd rather not take a stab at it without knowing the exact procedure. Thanks.javascript:void(0);

The same adhesive as used on the reflectors, really pesky stuff. You can actually soak a rag in the Goop and wrap the area, suck as the front fork. Have always used laquer thinner, but this product is superior.

Love the bike, but very dissapointed in the tank badge also, would have much perferred a special  painted HD design.
