Is the Oetiker pincer shown here different from the Knipex 1099 pincer?  Are the Oetiker clamps included in the "kit?"

The clamps do come in the kit. I do remember having to order more of them because the kit was short

I purchased the crimper that Porthole mentioned above and it has worked just fine

I may have had dumb luck so far but used a silicone hose clamp for the squeeze clamp I didn't have.

How long does it take to do the whole process of changing out filter and inspecting?

Not doing it regularly (every 25k miles or so) but having done it a few times over the years now I count on about an hour.

Thanks, Brian.  Duane describes a tool that sounds just like my Knipex 1099 pincer.  I'm pretty sure I have a few of just about every stepless liner clamp that Oetiker makes, but was just wondering if they were kitted.  Likely I can make up shortages.
Much appreciate the answer.   :2vrolijk_21:

I just had this done during my 25k service and asked the SM how they "inspect" the fuel pump per the service interval suggestion and was told they hook a gauge up to the fuel line and test the pressure. If the pressure is within spec then the filter is ok.

This would be the fuel line exterior to the tank?? Because if they hook it up inside it would just make sense to change anyway....correct?

Didn't ask, but I'd bet doughnuts to dollars that it would be done from the exterior. :nixweiss: From the knowledge gained from the site I was going to have it changed anyway.

Normally you don't "check" a fuel filter, you just replace it as a precaution.  The fact that the fuel pressure is still within specifications at a 25,000 mile inspection doesn't mean it won't finally become restricted enough to cause a pressure loss at 26,000 miles.  Besides, with all the bad internal lines that have been experienced it makes sense to go in there and check it all out.

Many/most maintenance interval items on all kinds of things like cars, bikes, lawnmowers, etc. aren't based on going as long as physically possible between changes (like waiting for the spark plugs to misfire repeatedly, or the air filter to clog up enough to cause a rich mixture, or the brake fluid to absorb enough moisture to drop the boiling point 100°).  The intervals are designed to allow the fluids and filters to be cleaned or changed before problems occur.  That's why they call it preventative maintenance.

If I read d00d's post correctly, the dealership just checks fuel pressure and if still in spec they don't change the filter?  Bad idea in my opinion.

Does sound like a way to talk themselves out of changing fuel filters whenever they can.  Must be a shop that does not like to do that particular task.  Just unhooking the quick disconnect and plugging on a pressure gauge has nothing to do with filter maintenance.

I agree with both of you in regards to how they are "inspecting" the fuel filter my question would be is this an industry (H-D) standard for performing this task. :nixweiss:

Maybe some members could check w/their dealers and ask how the fuel filter is checked during the 25k service to see if this is indeed the standard way of doing it.
