Rear Suspension for non mechanically inclined...
« on: July 23, 2009, 04:11:40 PM »

What rear suspension would anyone recommend for someone with the mechanical aptitude of a cat with no arms or legs? I have a 04 pumpkin SEEG..90% of riding is done two-up...Combined weight of driver and rider is approx. 375lbs(wow looks worse when you type it!)...Rear suspension bottoms out...Currently running about 35 lbs of air in the stock shocks. Don't mind spending $$...But I'm looking for something simple to use...Not looking to have adjust this and adjust that....Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Also 30" inseam is a concern as well...

First, you need to increase the amount of air pressure in your current shocks.  Two up, 50 psi is the maximum and that's what you need to run.  That should help the constant bottoming issue.

Try this thread for some info on the Works Performance shocks.  These are basically custom made to your requirements, and have a very simple lever adjustment for two up versus solo riding.

Also look at progressive 440's.  You will want the standard springs.  I put them on my '05 and couldn't be happier - similar weight 2 up and similar problems prior to the change.

Chris,
Curious to know if you remember how many "turns" you put into your progressives.  Also, do you re-adjust for 1 up vs 2 up?  Thanks

Progressive 440's are, in my mind, the best bang for the buck. They have a heavy duty version, which should be just fine tuned to the middle for solo, a bit up (harder) for two-up. Installation is done in three minutes per side. If you do not mind spending a lot more, try to review Legend Air Ride L1 (approx $ 1,500). You can change settings from the handle bar, and they will sure not bottom out on you.

Ride safely,
Louis
