How much money you think we are talking here ,to change to gear driven cams. Also has anyone on here done this,so as not to hypotnise this issue. Thanks for all the input.

Labor is going to depend upon whether you use adjustable pushrods or use solids and pull the heads.  The most inexpensive (as opposed to best) means is to use adjustables.  In that circumstance, you should be done and out the door around $850-$900.

Not riding as much now with winter setting in. Got 25k on the SERK and just wondering if I should pull the cam cover (nose cone) off and inspect those little tensioners shoes. Oil filter has been looking good when it is opened up and pull the paper out straight. Has anyone removed the cover to take a look, and if so can the rear tensioner be seen with out removing the cam support and lifters and heads? don

Don you cant see em without pulling the cam :(.   If you have gone that far might as well just bite the bullet and change it out to a gear drive.

Unbalance your right, but I'm kinda stuck in the middle with this 7 year ext. warranty. Just hate to see her let go, because I'm planning to keep this bike untill the partys all over and the road comes to a end. don

I keep reading when the gear drive is set up right it is not noisey. What does that mean? How are they adjusted? Are you talking gear to gear noise?

Straight cut gears can be noisier than normal if they are machined improperly or if they are misaligned.  In the case of the S&S gear drive, there is no adjustment as such.  The only thing they have to say about noise is that you must change the stock cam roller bearings to the ball bearings they supply with the kit.  The roller bearings have too much internal clearance which allows the gear spacing to vary slightly.  See the instruction sheet at this link for installation details:  http://www.sscycle.com/modules/instruction/uploads/51-1047.pdf

If the part causes the problem then you are in trouble as far as warranty. I would not even think twice about it. GEAR DRIVE all the way! Try it you will love it!

In Jan. I'm bringing the bike to a very reputable builder. He is going to dyno it and then we will talk performance mods. I then asked the questions of Cam tensioners this is what he said, I took apart an 89 twin cam with over 40000 miles and the tensioners showed just normal wear, he reccomends just to inspect them at proper intervals and you should be fine but he added that it also depends what spring compression you have and cam grind and how heavy wristed you are.So with this being said I still may be on the fence with this one. Will keep y'all updated.  Later, Q

I have around 23,000 milies on my 03 SERK and I'm going to pull the cams out and replace with gear drives as soon as I decide which ones to use.  I had a friend that has his tensioners let go when he was a couple hundred miles from home and had to ride another couple hundred to get where he was going---in the rain---to then get it to a dealer to have them fixed.  He was not a happy camper and I don't intend to get into the same situation if I can avoid it.  Plus he was on his way to a HOG rally to meet up with several other friends-not a great vacation now.
As I see it, you never know how long they will last so mine are going to be replaced with gear drive as soon as I pick a cam.

I assume that all stock 103's have the same spring compression?  And cam grind.  Is this a incorrect assumption?  I've heard the same advice from knowledgeable/experienced techs.   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Just wish there was more definitive info......hate to be spending money if it's unnecessary, but......don't want to trash a prefectly good motor either.  :-/   spyder

Running S&S 585 Gear drive cams with stock heads, on the 04 SEEG and I don't notice it to be any noisier than my 02 95CI EG Classic with the HD 203 cams.. The noise is a non issue on this bike.
