Air cleaner question
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:57:33 PM »

Is the new CVO street glide air cleaner already the performance version or is there still a better one?? Looking at the pics the element appears exposed which should work the best.

In the past touring models w/o lowers have come w/a free flowing (Stage 1) intake. The appearance of the intake/breather on the SESG would make me believe it is in fact a free flowing (Stage 1) intake. :nixweiss:

The reason I ask is that a friend of mine has a SERK and it needed the Stage 1 air cleaner. I was surprised to see the free flow already on the SESG. At least it will save me some money!!!!!! One less thing to do.

Interesting because the SERK had the same air cleaner...I think your friend's dealer sold him something he didn't need.  The SERK and the SESG air cleaners are the Stage One hi-flow units.

Unless you are thinking of the Heavy Breather. Harley's need the larger air cleaner for the 96" to breathe properly, it is no question that the higher air flow is needed for those extra 14". The main difference between the normal air cleaner and the stage one is a filter with a slightly larger surface area, and a backing plate that you remove to aide in greater air flow.

Unless my eyes are totally deceiving me, the 2010 SESG is equipped with the Ventilator air cleaner.  This is a high flow air cleaner, and the only thing H-D offers that will flow any more than this one is the Heavy Breather.  This same air cleaner is what came stock on the '09 SERG.

The Ventilator S/E Air Cleaner comes with a 'Rain Sock'. I'm assuming that (because of the open filter element) before the bike is washed/cleaned or before you ride into a downpour it's probably a good idea to put the sock on.

Can someone tell me how wet can the filter can get before downgrading performance? What kind of damage could occur if you didn't stop in a downpour to put the sock on?

Thanks.

The filters are washable, but they should be fairly dry when you use them. If they are more than slightly damp when the engine is running the one runs the risk of the filter coming apart and being sucked into the engine. I would greatly advise everyone to put the rain sock on everytime it rains.

The Street Glide has the same breather as the SERG. I looked at the one on the floor in St Pete today. Not sure how everyone thinks the elbow air cleaner flows so much more than the std SERG/SESG stock filter. Per Fullsac's post the difference between the stock one on a SERG and none at all is at most 3HP. NO one can feel three hp on a bike. So if the Heavy Breather actually flows more than the existing one, what is it 1 or 1.5 hp more? $300 for a 1-1.5 hp increase verges on crazy. But then we bought the bikes so we are a little brain slow anyway.

I hope the bike comes with the sock if the air cleaner is already on it.....

The air cleaner cant take much water - we've been through torrential tropical rain and the engine either cuts or ends up being able to run at tickover - as soon as you try toopen the throttle the engine sucks in great gobs of H2O - even with the sock on - you need two to keep going - applied before the rain :-)

The answer is to install an oiled filter similar to the unit that I had on the RK for years with no problems at all.

Good luck!

The 2010 SESG has the HD Ventilator air cleaner and the rain sock is included with the bike...
