if you have some idea but are unsure if you want to make it permanent, you could add some vinyl stickers and see if you like it then have it done by a pin striper

both of these are vinyl





Thats funny Neal, that looks more like masking tape than a vinyl decal in the first picture.   :D

Factory paint is very thin, but on there good.  After market paint is very heavy.  As fas as the many coats of clear laquer back in the day, you would sand mosto f it off between coats.
WhaT I am getting at is, yes you could scuff the existing paint (clear) have custom  work done, then clear the whole thing. If it was aftermarket paint /clear, you might start to get too much build up.

Here is a picture of my 00 SERG I had done. Look under the main stripes and you will see some flames. I will see if I have any better pictures...
