There is no real "bottom line" definitive answer to the warranty issue.  In my experience it is a dealer to dealer issue.  A GOOD dealer will not, of course, warranty non-HD products unless they have a specific arrangement with the manufacturer, but will honor any non-related engine issues that are not directly the result of your parts change or poor installation practices.  Some dealers, however will attempt to attribute any complaint to the modification.

Pontiac, that will depend on your dealership.  The Magnussen Moss Warranty Act (do a search on this site......it's posted somewhere) says that the failure has to be directly related to the modification in order for the modification to void the warranty.

However, some dealerships claim that any modification voids the warranty unless it's an HD part.  When this happens, it's not in line with the MMW Act and could be contested and won in a courtroom.  Depends on how far you want to go with it.

At our dealership they are very mod friendly and I've never heard of them not honering a warranty if the failure wasn't "directly related to the failure".  I think most dealerships in Northern Calif. are pretty much the same way.  Performance is their bread and butter, after the bike is sold.

Pontiac,

When dealing with the original factory warranty, the modification must be the direct cause of the failure for the manufacturer to void the warranty.  However, the "extended warranty", which is really a service contract and not a warranty, is a totally different beast.  I would suggest that you read the contract closely, and if it is still unclear you should contact the folks who back the contract and ask them directly (get the reply in writing).  Each company in the service contract business has their own small print and coverage policies.

pontiac621,
I'm going to go gear drive very soon (as soon as Zippers releases the gear drive cams for our 103 motors), and will have my dealer install them for me (remember I'm not that mechanically inclined, and don't want to purchase specialty tools that would be needed to do this). Therefore if something were to go wrong the dealer would more then likely take care of me (that's what has happened in past). Hopes this helps in making your mind up, and good luck.
