09 USE4 TIRES
« on: August 16, 2009, 08:44:52 PM »

I have 9500 miles and my front tire is sounding like a mud tire on a 4X4.  I was curious to the performance of the new dunlops.
Is there any other options out there?

Thanks

IMOA I think the dunlops suck.I Like metzlers and the dunlop on the ft of my 09cuse4 is also turning into a mud tire and I am very anal about tire pressures. I am not very happy with the tires.I have 6900 on mine and in 2 weeks the wife and I are going to the museum out in Milwaukee    :bananarock: :bananarock:.I have my dealer looking into the metzlers now for my bike  so when I get back from the trip I'll get them changed,by then I should be real close to 10k.I have used metzlers on my 03 heritage and i have used them on my 07 Flhx right from day 1 .Now its time to put them this bike

I started a thread in tires/wheels but that is a little more general so I am looking for info here.
2009 USE4's ... what is available for front and back other than Dunlops?
I am not opposed to Dunlops but based on the original tires cupping so bad I figured my business will go to some other manufacturer.  I will of course reconsider if my dealer gets any where with Dunlop or HD for a partial credit.  I have 9500 miles on the bike.  The tire pressure is always monitered and accurate.
I was hoping for some feedback from someone who has a different brand on an 09 Ultra.

Thanks

I know you are looking for feedback on another mfg.

Just asking:  do you have 407's or 408's on your seuc?

I had two front tires that were 407's and they were the worst. 408 seem to be ok, and the moco paid for the replacement.

Just had the 408 put on in warranty replacement for the 407.  Had 2 407's first one made it 6k second one was cupped at 3k.  So far so good I think i have just short of 1k miles on the 408, but need a few thousand miles more to give a fair assessment.

As far as a fair assessment I don't think anyone can do that.
Best that I can tell the wear on the 407's are all over the spectrum with some having issues at 3 to 4K miles and some having issues at 9 to 11K miles.
The wear does not appear to be bike specific either with different models going from high to low in wear and cupping.
My experience with my original 407 was that it was great till I hit about 10K miles and with plenty of tread left at 11600 miles it was cupped so bad that it had to go.
Knowing the 407's were having issues I ordered a 408 for the front of my 09 SEUC.
I am now at 19200 miles and with 7600 on the 408 it is wearing fine.
Will it last longer than the 407 and not cup, I don't have a clue.
My 407 never had an issue till I hit 10K so I am waiting to see how this 408 holds up.
For me, my experience says that a front tire (based on the past 10 baggers I have owned) should give around 18 to 24K miles of service.
Will my 408 do that, only time and miles will tell the story?

I have the 407's.  They started making noise at around 5k and now it is becoming too annoying at 9.5k.
I am willing to use the 408's if they are holding up.  Just would like to use another brand just because I feel like the front tire should be good for closer to 20k.
Who knows I have great dealer and maybe they will come up with the solution.
It just pizzes me off I am dealing with a front tire issue at less than 10k miles.

This thread had me concerned enough that I had the dealer put a D408 on my 09 CVO (that had the D407) before I did a cross country trip.  I have 8500 miles on the D408 and it still looks new.  I told the dealer I wouldn't have even considered changing it just based on the website, but when I found HD discontinued this new designed tire, the D407, I got worried and made the swap.  Unfortunately, I had to pay for it.  I have a D407 with 1K on it in my garage awaitng for what should be a recall.

Ride Safe!

I would love to know if there is any change to the 408 other than the direction arrow.  I would never ride the 407 mounted backwards...but I would not be surprised if you would be riding the same tire dunlop calls the 408.  They sure look the same.

Just curious.... since I only have 2 tires and 1 life I will not be trying it out!!!

Good question.

Other than the reversed tread direction and the part number, I don't know what else changed.

Unless the tread is pitched in one direction or something, they prolly are the same tire reversed. Very good point brought up here! :nixweiss: ;)

Well like I said my dealer is outstanding, I got a phone call about a month ago just to ask how everything with the bike was. (bike is almost a year old)
I of course told her it was great and I am still suffering from the constant smile...but then I mentioned the front tire.
She told me she was meeting with a Dunlop rep in a month and would ask about it.
Today she called and told me Dunlop and HD will not warranty it.
But as a dealer they are going to put on a new 408 because they feel these tires are not wearing as long as they should.
NO charge.  Guess who I will buy my next HD from?

I really can not say enough good things about this dealer's customer service.

Starved Rock HD
Ottawa IL.

Just to be clear about the 407 vs 408 vs backwards 407...just me being curious and I would not be recommending to run your 407 backwards.
My Lawyer told me to wirte that. :2vrolijk_21:
