Damn mirrors...
« on: August 20, 2009, 03:54:29 PM »

Maybe its the salt air here... maybe its because I only clean the bike once a week... but the mirrors have deteriorated rather quickly... seems they are corroding along the cosmetic lines.... Time to find something else less prone to that. :soapbox:

You wash your scoot once a week?!?!??!?  :nixweiss:

Don't let my SERG hear that, LOL!

I've washed my SERG about once a month since I got it. In the week-and-a-half I was traveling to Sturgis and back, it got *really* filthy. I've washed it since, though.

To make a long story short, I don't think it's your habits regarding motorcycle cleanliness that are the problem. My bike has 10K miles since 2/12/2009 and the mirrors seem just fine. Oh, and my bike is not garaged. It is kept under a carport and I (sometimes) keep a cover on it.

I had the same issue with only the left mirror on my prior RG.  Sounds like a warranty matter to me.  See what the dealer or HD says.  If not replacing, you might want to try cleaning with a chrome polish or Windex (both have ammonia which is good for chrome) and then wax, wax.

If were only that simple...

Being in Hawaii HD tells us they will only warranty one piece of chrome due to corrosive atmosphere here (Salt spray in the air along shorelines, Volcanic fallout, etc)

I had the oval TC mirrors on my Fatboy with the billet stems with the holes and they did the same thing...

I replaced those with a smooth version with the solid stems and they survive much better.

I only wash it once a week because I ride it 7 days a week... I'm off Mondays and Tuesdays, so first thing Monday AM I'm out scrubbing the weeks worth of road grime off. (It rains just about every day on my side of the island)

I've got 9700 Miles since delivery 2/19/2009

My bike is cleaned most every time I have it out, and cleaning it on my return from vacation (a 25 man-hour job, I'm anal about it) I find:  Both mirrors (vintage 07) bubbling, my timing cover (vintage 07) bubbling, my SE 110 script derby cover (unknown vintage) bubbling, my licence holder (new in March) bubbling, and AGAIN - half the chrome fallen off a muffler end cap (new in March).  Now none of this had shown before I went away, (and the bike had the anal clean prior to departure) so I'm left wondering what it was during an 18 day 3900 mile trip that suddenly caused this....  :confused5:

Hmmm, we had that with a friends bike who came back from adria-island-hopping and couldn't clean his bike for a month - but 18 days seems rather a short time for excessive corrosion to happen out of a sudden ???

It does.  The trip was Holland-Germany-Austria-Italy (Sud Tirol)-Sardinia-Corsica-France-Belgium-England then back to Scotland.  I guess we can call it 30 days by the time the serious cleaning was done, though I gave it a qucik wash as soon as we got home, and it was washed (a little!) twice on the trip.  One problem we did have was in Sardinia; parked outside a hotel reception close to grass, and I suspect that they must have turned on lawn sprinklers during the night, as next day the bike was covered in little white rings where droplets had dried. Those white rings were a NIGHTMARE to get off - they were on everything - chrome, paint, leather....  But that's not related to the bubbling chrome, I'm sure of that. Oh, and of course, we were on 5 sea ferries, but I've done that often enough in the past too - the bikes don't get wet, and the car deck is so hot that the atmosphere is dry.  Not that either.....

 Eqcons,

The sprinkler water, do you know if it is brackish, reclaimed or otherwise part of a reuse system?

Most of those are high in salt content and will accellerate corrosion exponentially.

Not a clue - I can be pretty sure it wasn't that though - the side of the bike that didn't get any has worse bits than the side that did!  I suspect it was heat. Temps were in the very high 30s (C) and low 40s.  If a pinhole of corrosion existed, maybe the heat accelerated it.

I've gone far longer than that with my NON-CVOs and never had issues... a little tough up polish on the real bad spots and the bike was fine...

The CVO however is a real PITA... My friend was half joking when I was taking delivery... "you're gonna hate it, you dont like chrome"

In a way, he was right...

I never use water to clean mine unless it's extremely dirty.....We ride along the Gulf Coast frequently and the bike bike just gets covered with salt as well.

Meguires has a quick detail spray that is silicone based which prevents corrosion anywhere on the bike. This seems to eliminate any rust/ corrosion issues..

The left mirror bubbled up on my 90 flhtcu.  That kind of corrosion is from inadequate preparation or dirty wash before plating.
They replaced the one mirror...I'll just wait til the other bubbles up to.  Defect in material and workmanship...broken record.
