Might (or might not) think twice about this.  Axles sometimes slide on chrome swingarms.  Keeping the belt tight is occasionally a problem.

As for changing the swingarm there's no difference because it's chrome.  If you've not been there and done that yet it's likely as good a time as any to pick up a service manual to have at hand before tackling the job.

I did now find it in the service manual under "rear fork". Instead of looking a little harder i went straight to the computer. :2vrolijk_21:

Didn't think about that.  Sorry.  The terminologies do vary a bit.  Still remember the first time years ago I saw "propeller shaft" in a Motors manual.

swapping out swingarm
« Reply #5 on: August 26, 2009, 12:23:10 AM »

For a guy with average mechanic ability but with all the tools needed on a scale of 1 to 10 how difficult is it to take a swingarm off and put a new one on? About how much time do you think it should take? I do have a service manual to go off of. I read it over tonight and I think I can handle it really just courious how many hours it will take, don't have alot of time this weekend to spend on it.

Was actually pretty easy to do. If there is beer in my fridge the work usually stops after about 4 of em, so I usually don't drink and putz around on stuff.

Now I'm trying to put swingarm on my bike and cant get the rear axle out. I have the H-D "custom rear axle aduster and axle nut kit" on the bike. The right side is just a cover with a set screw but the left side the chrome nut dosent have a set screw and I cant get it off. Even while holding the right side with a wrench the nut just turns and turns. I tried holding the left side nut and turning on the right side because thats the side it comes out but the axle just spins. I don't actually know how it is suppose to work but it is strange and i just can't figure it out right now.
