Follow along on my 2010 SE Ultra engine/bike build....
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:52:21 PM »

Well.... I pulled the trigger on starting the build of my 2010 FLHTCUSE5. Dealer offered me 20% off on all parts they supplied in the build and a discounted labor rate. Since they are doing the work and its been less than 60 days since I bought the bike, they will extend a discounted price for the extended warranty and cover all their work under the 5 years of the extended warranty.

Here's some of the basics I'm having done:

- Removing rear amp and overlay harness
- Installing detach kit for tourpak
- Installing Biketronics Titan amp and 6.5" Titan XL speakers up front
- Install chrome inner primary
- Install chrome switches
- Install windshield LED trim bar

The engine work:

- Heads, rocker boxes and covers removed and shipped to Hillside Cycles to be setup for Woods 408 cam
- Exhaust header removed and sent to Fullsac to have the catalytic converter removed
- Install SE 58 mm TBW throttlebody
- Install larger injectors (5.3 gms/sec)
- Install roller rockers
- Install adj. pushrods
- Install Ventilator A/C
- Install and dyno tune with Pro Super Tuner
- Reassemble engine with chrome bolts
- Replace stock baffles with Fullsac 2.25" (I've already made the baffles removeable so this is just a few minute swap before going to the dyno)

Here's a pic of the bike as it looked before the work:

which 408 cam? r u using the 10.5 pistons, or having the heads shaved to increase compression? if just shaving the heads, i'd use the 7H cam...

Scott at Hillside is setting the heads up for 10.7 compression. He recommended staying with the stock pistons. Bob Woods recommended the TW408-6 in combination with the headwork from Hillside as that would be the best combination for a heavy bike and larger rider.

Bob and Scott both recommended the 408-6 cam (lift .650). I figure I couldn't get a more knowledgable recommendation than the guy who makes the cams and the guy who's doing the headwork. BTW Hillside is the largest buyer of Woods cams.

Here's my stock dyno on the SE Ultra's 110 with stock mufflers that I had taken as a baseline - 77hp/100ft-lbs.

You've been busy! Should be a real stump puller. Interesting stock torque curve :confused5:

FYI. You may want to look into the 58mm SE throttle body. I'm using it on my build. My builder came back from Sturgis with info that the SE 58mm is not all that good a unit. Some Harley techs there indicated if a build is not doing as well as expected and is using the 58mm tb, remove it and try the stock 50mm. They are getting good results with this. I have no first hand knowledge on this yet.

Also Deweyheads is getting ready to post some info his obtained on the 58mm vs the stock 50mm tb. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=40378.msg622616#msg622616

I know Dewey and HPI are opening up the stock TB to make em flow better. Just wanted to pass it on for your consideration. Good luck with the build. I'll be following along.

The Tq curve is certainly odd but I think if you look at it from 2500 up its not quite as strange as it looks on the whole graph.

Still rather pitiful hp for so much displacement. Really demonstrates how the EPA bureaucrats have choked these motors down to the level of lawn mowers. The catalytic converter, stock baffles, cam design and head design all conspire to choke these motors like someone shoved a sock down their throat.

Thanks for the tip. I'll certainly consider that should the results not be acceptable. I went with the 58mm at Bob Woods' and Scott's (Hillside) recommendation. Unfortunately no one out there makes a larger tbw throttlebody than HD's 50mm. You can see this dyno chart from a 110, with the SE 58mm TB, TW408-6 cam and head work turned out to be pretty damn good. I don't think I'll be at this level of performance since I'm not going to a 2:1 exhaust, but it sure is an impressive performance if you ask me. Something for my build to aspire to...

On a separate note, by going the route of the HD's 58mm (assuming it delivers on performance), I'll still have my 50mm TBW TB which should get a good $ on Ebay (or from anyone else that might be interested in it).

Are you doing any work to the bottom end to hold this engine together?

Are you doing any work to the bottom end to hold this engine together?

Had a good discussion with the service mgr about the bottom end yesterday. I was thinking of having the crank tig welded however after talking with the service mgr, it's probably not the best course for my situation. Here's the thinking....yes, the crank is potentially a weak spot in the build and he could have it sent out to Millenium to have it taken care of BUT what's the point?

Since I'm getting the extended warranty, if there's ever an issue with the crank its covered under the warranty. In fact by getting it Tig welded it could potentially be a cause for a warranty claim to be denied (or at least more closely scrutinized).

As it is now, the engine bottom is intact as it came from the factory (other than the head removal), which is probably better from a warranty claim perspective. In the end, I decided against cracking the case since I'm getting the extended warranty. Should I have a problem with the crank down the road, the Service mgr confirmed it would be covered under the factory and my extended warranty. Seems like reasonable logic to me to NOT have the crank modified. Thoughts?

I just noticed you have a SE 58mm throttlebody on your RK. Are you satsified with the build or looking back on the engine work would you have had the stock TB set out for boring instead of installing the SE 58MM TB?
