These little ceramic beads have been a known quantity long enough know there should be some informed opinion of their effectiveness.  Do they work well?  Not at all?  Vary by road condition or speed?  What's the story.

Not asking how a tire manufacturer's warranty might be jeopardized by their use.  Just if they work.

I gave them a good honest try in my bike. Before the beads were in, I had about 2.5 oz of lead on each wheel.  I put 2.5 oz of beads in each tire, removed the weights and rode it. I was told by the rep at Innovative Balancing to only use 2 oz of beads, even tho I had 2.5 oz of lead applied.

Bottom line, it was terrible. I rode it for the whole MV '08 weekend. It was bad enough that I could look at the front axle while riding and just see it bouncing up and down like crazy, even on a local slab that is milled smooth.

I took the wheels to the local tire changer and paid them to unmount, vacuum out the beads, remount and balance the tires. I then sent them to a member of the site for free. By time I was done, it was a $100 experiment that did not work.

I then bought the No-Mar static balancer and do my own balancing. I am much happier with the ride now, it's smooth as silk. I check the tires a couple of times during their life and tweak the weights as necessary. I also use it to balance the wheels on the Bushtec trailer.

Here's the problem I saw with the beads....

As described, the beads move away from the heavy spot to balance the tire. I'm cool with that.

The problem I have is that to keep the beads where they need to be, there needs to be a constant imbalance condition. Otherwise they will migrate and spread out around the circumference.

I put them in my truck too and am now waiting for those tires to wear out so I can take them out.

I bit hard on the cute little beads, but in the end, I got bit.

Thanks Chuck.  Appreciate the further reporting.  In the end after all the reviews I'd decided against using them.  The reviews were too mixed.  That they work "some" of the time is just not a ringing overall endorsement.

I have had resounding success & satisfaction with the Dyna Beads.  After obtaining the 'FreeChuckBeads' and installing/using them I was so pleased that I ordered more for the other scooter.  A couple of riding buds also are using them now and are very pleased (esp. since not having to run the ugly weights).  I can't explain the reason that some have not found them to be 'as advertised', but can say that a few of us love 'em in our scooter tires.  :-* spyder

In both the public and private response to the question that inconsistency was the norm Spyder.  Some were very pleased.  Some had specific product related problems.  The majority were in favor.  But it wasn't a huge majority.  Wheel weights are small.  I do my best to avoid drama (and redundant wheel dismounts) when I can.  So I kept it simple.

It was suggested to me that lead will be discontinued as the primary component of the wheel weights and that the pursuit of alternative replacement materials yield a much larger footprint. One HD engineer said that the size of future weights may be very problematic.  FWIW

Screw 'em.  If such should be seen on the near horizon I'll buy a box of weights for $25 and have a lifetime supply.  It's not like we're short of things that are as dense as lead anyway.  This site and the US Congress prove that all the time ???:huepfenlol2:

As mine were so good on previous bikes, but a problem on the front of the current one, I 'm starting to wonder if they are not the problem, but the D407 tyre..... (see service bulletin!)   :nixweiss:

Eq, I had my tire changed early, I complianed about coast down wobble and gave then the tt document, changed it to 408 gratis...I run 42 psi in it and the issue is gone.

GH, they are too dense to realize they need to train the $7 hour people to clean and index the wheel and the tire separately...Maybe they could follow the automotive industry, naw....to dense. They couldn't get the tire design right or was it dunlop?  You know, old bikes don't have these issues. Really, lead weights, global warming, skunk apes...where does it end

Skunk apes will get a tire out of balance no doubt.
