SERK4 motor shutting down 4 times in 45 miles.
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:20:17 PM »

Just Us Six and I were out riding for the day getting his scoot tuned and enjoying the day. On our way home, our dealer is 120 miles from our homes, we had traded bikes, did a little rippin around and had a great time. After we switched back to our own scoots, I was going along on US 150 @ +70 mph. I notice the bike suddenly slowing. No stutter, backfiring or any sign of anything amiss. I was in gear but she was not making power / ignition. All lights and electrical was still on.

I pulled in the clutch and hit the start button. She turned over but it was like I had no spark or gas or something.

Pull in the clutch, put her in N and try a restart while rolling, just cranks over. I pull to the side and stop.

I turn the ignition switch off, wait for the two chrips from the security system, turn on ignition and she fires right up.

We look at each other and ride on. I pull into a HD dealer nearby but they're closed on Monday. I call my guys. Roger walks me thru getting the 5 codes which he writes down. They are over 90 miles away. I'm around 30 from my home. It's 5 pm so I elect to nurse it home.

The motor does this again 3 more times. Each time it takes a little longer to reset. The last time the engine check light stays on for a long time while the bike resets. After everything clears and I get her restarted, the light come on again for about 15 sec then goes out.

So far this bike has had the turn signals refuse to self cancel which was a sensor.
The Speedo / Tach went out and came back in after several days - been replaced
The Security system refused to reset allowing the bike to be started with no FOB
The lights would stay on after turning off the ignition switch, heck you could still start the motor
The ECM has been replaced.

Stay tuned.

Starting to look into this problem(s) this morning. The following are the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) I received after the 1st shut down:

P0131 Front Oxygen Sensor Low
P0132 Front Oxygen Sensor High
P0151 Rear Oxygen Sensor Low
P0152 Rear Oxygen Sensor High
P0154 Rear Oxygen Sensor Inactive
P1357 Front Cylinder Combustion Intermittent
P1511 EFI Power Management Mode
P1514 Air Flow Fault
P2105 EFI Forced engine shutdown
P2135 TPS Correlation Error

I cleared the above codes and finished the ride home with three more failures. The DTC's for these repeated failures:

P0131 Front Oxygen Sensor Low
P0151 Rear Oxygen Sensor Low
P1357 Front Cylinder Combustion Intermittent
P1511 EFI Power Management Mode
P1514 Air Flow Fault
P2105 EFI Forced engine shutdown
P2135 TPS Correlation Error

DTC # that did not repeat

P0132 Front Oxygen Sensor High
P0152 Rear Oxygen Sensor High
P0154 Rear Oxygen Sensor Inactive

As I stated earlier, this is my 2nd ECM so there's still something amiss. Anyone with DTC knowledge got any ideas?  :nixweiss:

Lot of silence here, Jeff...

I think you have managed to stump the entire site....

Holy crap...  I wouldn't know where to start...

If not the ECM - the wiring harness to the ECM???

I have no idea..... :nixweiss:

If you throw out the O2 sensor codes and the no combustion codes, which were most likely triggered by the self shutdown, I think you will find that the rest of the codes deal with the Electronic Throttle Control and Throttle Position Sensor.  P1511, P1514, P2135 are all ETC related codes, and P2105 is the programmed shutdown of the engine that is triggered by the ETC faults.

If memory serves, wasn't this TB recently modified?  That would be the first place to look, and the most likely place to start is the wiring for the TPS.

That's what I was talking with my guys about Jerry. I always like to look at the last thing changed. Strange I got over 400 miles on the new TB with no problems then this. I 'm thinking of slapping the 58mm back on to see if the problem goes bye bye.

When I called in today, I heard the tech say "Bike from hell" again. We all laughed a little as it's that or cry. I'm going to start by looking at the HD/HPI 54mm TB. However, this is the stock unit from this bike.  :nixweiss:

Black Diamond,
What do you use for fuel/ECM management?  TTS, SERT, Thundermax?  I don't see it listed in all your goodies.  Not to start a new thread either, but does someone out there have a listing of all the codes?  In particular, the FLHRSE4 or Touring models?  Thanks in advance, and I hope you get your scoot problems worked out.

Thanks GRC and Black Diamond :orange: I have all the manuals for my ride (FLHRSE4), are they listed somewhere, or is it collect them as you go?  Thanks again.  29 and a wake-up!!! to get the heck out of Iraq ... at least for another year or so anyway. :-\  Can't wait to get back on the SERK!  Take easy you guys ... or take it anyway you can get it. :pineapple:

the diagnostic codes are listed in the Electronic Diagnostic Manaual for your particular year, I believe for 2008 it is
99497-08
It has a troubleshooting flowchart for each code, as well as a schematic of that particular circuitry.  The 2008+ will be of particular value because of the introduction of throttle by wire and also how that relates to Cruise Control, etc.

Yep!
The P1514 Air Flow Fault causes the ECM to toss the P2105 EFI Forced engine shutdown according to the book. the hip bones connected to thigh bone

The shop is looking at the MAP sensor to see if it is faulty. I've had an new TSST, Speedo/Tach, Fuel Gauge, and an ECM to name a couple off the top of my head. Maybe my bike was assembled after a big employee party.

I was wondering about that P1514 Air Flow Fault.  In the automotive arena, that DTC is set when the air flow calculated from the throttle position, barometric pressure, and rpm doesn't match the air flow reported by the Mass Air Flow sensor.  Since H-D doesn't have a MAF, I'm not sure what they are comparing the calculated flow to. :confused5:  One thing that is involved besides the MAP sensor in that calculation is the TPS.  There is also another code in your earlier post that shows a TPS fault (P2135 TPS correlation error).  Hopefully they are closely examining the TPS and associated wiring, since a fault there could set both the P1514 and the P2135 codes.

This stuff can be a real pain to track down, because failures often set a ton of codes that act as red herrings.  Not the real problem, but they were triggered by the original (real) problem.  Good luck.
