Do the 2009 CVO's have the same issues as the 07/08? 110 engine
« on: October 04, 2009, 11:12:00 AM »

Hi guys, I'm a newbie here but I'm thinking about picking up an 09 CVO.  I have a couple of questions:

1.  I was wondering if the 09 engines are plagued by the same issues the 07/08's were?

2.  Is it true that 09 CVO's made after a certain date don't have the same problems?

3.  How about the 2010 CVO?  Problem free or what?  lol

Thanks,

every model year has will have some issues old or new, but after all its a machine it can be fixed
we unfortunately dont buy these bike cus of top spec/quality but cus of style and tradition

07/08 head gasket leaks appear to have been addressed
some 09 had motor powder coat problems which 07/08 didnt have
all 110ci motors have heat issues which can be lessened
crank run out and poor spec in manufacture is a lingering problem

Well brothers 2009 cvo was making niose and had oil on plugs at 10,000 miles. My dealer found out of round cyl's .004-.005 and a sticky valve so after a .010 bore job, pistons and valve job he's good to go.

Thankfully, in this age of instant information, where few things can remain hidden, someone had the vision to start a website like cvoharley.com where we can all get together and discuss those strengths and weaknesses.

Amazing, I was just thinking about that same thing earlier.

No Harley, for that matter no motorbike is perfect. You just try and find a comfortortable bike and then you love it for its strengths and tolerate its weaknesses. All of us love riding and most of us love riding Harleys.

For the most part Harley's including CVO's are quite reliable and most if not all issues are covered under warranty. What bothers many of us as owners is that we pay top dollar for a product that is still under development. Then we find out that we're being used as the MoCo's guinea pigs. Thankfully, in this age of instant information, where few things can remain hidden, someone had the vision to start a website like cvoharley.com where we can all get together and discuss those straights and weaknesses.

All complaining aside, my wife and I wouldn't trade the memories, the rides and the friendships we've gained over the years while riding Harley Davidson motorcycles.

I agree with what you say, I ride a Harley also :D  I'm just trying to find out exactly what kind of issues the 09's have and can they be fixed permanently under warranty or with the addition of after market parts such as an oil cooler etc?

Well, the CVO touring machines come standard with an oil cooler, so that aspect is already addressed.  As was stated earlier the up front issue is the heat generated by the 110 and the lean 14.7 AFR that they are tuned to from the factory to meet EPA requirements.  Once you get that AFR down to a more manageable 13.7 -13.9 across the band, you'll see some reduction in heat....but I don't care what model year v-twin you have, if you're sitting in stop and go traffic and it's 90 degrees outside, an air-cooled engine is going to get unbearably hot.  My 1200's, 88, 96, and now 110s have all gotten very hot in those situations...(and even my water-cooled Wing that I had many moons ago would get extremely hot in these situations.)

So basically heat is the main issue?  Does it actually cause damage though or what?  And if I were to put on an EFI tuner with auto tune like the PCV or Thunder Max would that solve the issue?

I have the PC V with autotune and I am very satisfied.  I had the 07 with Thundermax and it was great also.  I am not aware of the Thundermax working on the 09'S.

It would appear that another very good solution is the Mastertune TTS from FullSac.  Lot's of very satisfied customers.

Point to remember, as said above the engine is air cooled, no air movement lots of heat.  Also, consider the 110 is 25% bigger than the 88 and the 88's weren't setup to run so lean.  So add 14.7 lean and 25% bigger engine, they are very hot when not moving.  In south Texas they are hot when cruising down an asphalt highway in 100 degree heat.  The reduction from 14.7 afr to 13.7, addition of allowing the engine to breath easier reduces the heat substantially. But the engine is still 25% bigger.

Some bikes are ceramic coating the header pipes to kepp the heat off the rider.  Some of the reults appear to be very good.
