October in Poland
« on: October 08, 2009, 04:00:44 AM »

as some of you may know, october 3rd is the day the germans celebrate the reunion of the two german states some 19 years back. It's an additional day off, quite often a thursday or friday so ideal for a prolonged ride.

As we live in the farthest south-eastern part of Germany, weather can be quite unfriendly already this time of the year in the surrounding mountain areas, especially in the Giant Mountains. Those mountains are not sooo giant as the name suggests - the highest peak, the Śnieżka is just some 5,260 ft - but there may be already some snow and temperatures below 24 F.

In 2002, the first Polish National H.O.G. Rally took place in the mountain town of Karpacz, just below the Śnieżka and ever since then we made a habit of riding our "formal" Last Mile to Karpacz around october 3rd. Weather may be cold already, but usually those are some days without rain/snow before the winter takes over in that part of Europe. It's an easy ride of just some 150 m from Dresden so can be done in almost any weather condition, especially as there is the choice to approach Karpacz either from the low Łomnica-Valley or climb over the giant mountains from Czech Republic.

It's off-season there, not many tourists in town, the autumn colours usually are in full display and in the quiet of the night you may listen to the stags having their rut sometimes just a couple of 100 yards away from the town. This year was the first time we had to stop and change into rain-gear for what turned out to be just a 15 Minutes downpour  :-\ Apart from that, Poland showed it's best and most friendly side for the rest of the 3 days.

I won't upload the pics to this site as there are far to many, but you may watch them on our site: click.

Great ride report! Great photos! Looks like everyone had a good time. Would love to come over and ride in Germany some day. My wife and I spent a week in Munich several years ago and had a wonderful time. I learned to say "sprechen mit meiner frau." as she is fluent in German.
