Using 2005 Tour Pak with quick disconnect on 2009 frame
« on: October 19, 2009, 01:25:12 PM »

When the Moco changed the frame in 2009 many of our parts would no longer fit.  Among those were my 2005 tour pak  quick disconnect rack that attached the tour pak to the quick disconnect hardware on the bike.

I purchased a new rack that would connect to the 2009 docking hardware on the bike.  The problem I am having is that the mounting holes in the new rack do not align with the pre-drilled holes in the plate on the bottom of the inside of the tour pak.  It's either buy a mounting plate for a 2009 tour pak which would presumably have all the holes properly aligned for the 2009 version of the rack or guesstimate where the rack should be mounted on the bottom of the tour pak and drill some new holes through the tour pak and plate.

Can anyone think of any other alternatives.  Has anyone encountered this issue already?  I am all ears.

I thought the tour packs themselves were the same?  I was told that it's just the mounting hardware that's different.

At least a couple of other 09 riders had written of running in to this.  Remember one describing just drilling new holes and moving on.

It's certainly the easiest solution.  If....  What I don't remember ever being fully detailed at the time was whether the "rounded" structurally supporting part of the mold for the older tour paks is what aligns with the newer racks.  If it's being supported satisfactorily I'd just mock/mark it all up for position relative to the seat and drill new holes appropriately.  Would want to make sure the support in the tour pak body was in the right place first though.

We mounted an earlier full-sized tour pack to a SERG detachable rack. Had to shim up the box 1/2 inch to clear the ridge on the bottom of the box to clear the rack.
Also had to drill 4 new holes (still in the steal support in the bottom of the box.

Wish I had the bike here to take some pictures. It came out fine, the side rails of the rack hide the 1/2 gap, and you can't see the gap from the rear. Next time I have the bike over here, I'll grab my camera.

The new rack from side to side is narrower than the old.  Whereas the old rack had a horse shoe shaped bar that fit on a ridge and was attached to the old rack, the new rack is smaller and fits inside the recessed bottom of the tour pak.  I can't envision any structural issues mounting it in the recessed area but who knows.  Mock up and drill is what I am inclined to do.  The side to side measurement is easy, just center it but the front to back I am not sure of.  Does the leading edge of the tour pak rack flush with the leading edge of the tour pak or is the rack recessed.  That's my question.  Thanks guys for taking the time to help me out.

Pictures or better yet a measurement of the leading edge of the tour pak rack relative to the tour pak.
Is it flush or is the rack recessed a bit so the tour pak stick out some.

We just used some 1/2" nylon spacers to raise the box up just high enough to clear the ridge on the bottom. She elected to move the box closer to the seat as she does not want the backrest on the box.........her personal preference. The box can be mounted further back if so desired, just a matter of drilling some holes.
This was an older box that was color matched to fit her bike.
The spacers are not really noticeable when you look at the bike, unless you are REALLY looking for them.
Easy install, even though the spacers are not chromed!

Hope this helps a bit.

Mike, where the hardware goes through the mounting plate is an area that appears to have separation between the plate and tour pak.  If so is there some kind of spacer used to fill the gap between the detachable mount plate and the tour pak?
