Thermal Coating Of Head Pipes! Who To Use?!!!
« on: November 14, 2009, 11:41:09 AM »

I have a new FatCat head pipe I want to have thermal coated before I install it. I see youze have used different outfits for this in the past. Cost aside, whose product is best? Is this chit all the same, or are there some products more effective than others? I got a qoute from Jet Hot for $190 plus $50 additional if stripping is required, plus $35 shipping back to me. I'm looking for THE BEST THERMAL PERFORMANCE available, so I don't care what brand I use. What's the REAL DEAL on this topic? Thanks gang! ;)

Howie

I just had my pipes done by www.calicocoatings.com for less than $120 including return shipping. Guys at the shop say the coating looked great. Over thousand miles on em so far, looks new. FWIW

I don't know if Howie does or not; but I didn't.  I know they get about $200 for a pair of heat shields.  So their price for a separate pipe and heat shields might quickly approach the cost of an exhaust set from the vendor channel.  But I do have a spare muffler....

Thanks for that link Jeff! Anyone actually know anything about the different types of coatings, and which actually do something besides look pretty? I didn't know D&D did that, but I have a pipe here already I plan to use. So I'm on my own with that. I can pick what I want to use, so I thought I'd see if anyone knew anything about this stuff and see if it's more hype than fact. And see which was the best, or if it made any difference. Thanks! ;)

Howie, I've used Jet Hot's basic ceramic coating on headers several times.  It does what you'd expect and does it well.  Helps carry heat away a lot faster.

I don't have a big need on the red bike.  But the lowers are back on the Road Glide now.  That reminded me I'd thought of getting a head pipe coated for it.

I've used Jet Hot and HPC over the years....both with very competitive and satisfactory results....

:orange:  I got both the Catless header pipe and crossover pipe for my 09 SERG done at www.jet-hot.com.  Got the Sterling Extreme coating which deflects up to 1700 degree heat. What ever you do make sure there is no heat sheilds bolted onto the pipe.  This will cost you an additional cost for them to remove them. Also if there is any chrome removal to be done this will cost also.  Talk to Jeff when you contact them, he was the one that i spoke to. Hope this helps!   :orange:

Hello Hoist,
I have used Jet Hot Extreme Sterling on my header pipes on my '09 SEUC. Very happy with results, look great, no bluing, lower surface temps resulting in much less radiated heat. I have used this product on my hot rod projects with same results.
I dropped them of at Action Powdercoating  at 105 Verdi St in Farmingdale Long Island (631 845 1949) and they had them back in a week. Good folks to deal with and their powdercoating work is first class also.

I guess I might be odd man out here. What I like best about my Jet-Hot coating is no bluing. I notice no difference with the heat. JMO

I agree. At first I tried to convince myself I could feel a difference but .... I do like the look. The Calico thermal on the BUB's looks identical to my Jet Hot D&D pipe.

Howie (evil), check out this blurb.  A place I just at this moment saw online:

"Ceramic Coatings done the old fashioned way.  One job at a time by a skilled craftsman.  Process displayed by video link.  Watch Good Howie suck up a mouth full of liquid ceramic, wrap his lips around your tail pipe and spew through a perfect even coating from one end to the other.  A masterpiece everytime.  Contact us at www.goodhowieblows.com .
