Sparkplugs...
« on: December 30, 2005, 04:30:53 PM »

What is your spark plug of choice. I ask because my bike is in now for service and the Tech (who does alot of performance work) changed my autolite plugs to the Harley Gold. I have run autolite for years, they were the plug of choice at the drag strip. The tech tells me that with performance motors the gold gives him a more consistant line on the dyno and 2 or 3 more hp.  Says change them at least once, maybe twice a year for top perfomance.    Any thoughts....

I was thinking I changing to the SE triple platinium plugs, a mate of mine put a set in his 95 cube (102hp) & said he noticed a big difference power wise. But I do believe they don't last too long.

I've been using them for a couple of years on this and a couple of other bikes.  Really havn't noticed a lot of difference excpet they run cleaner and really help the "hot starts" on the 100+ days.

My spark plug of choice is a European brand I started using on my BMW R1200C motorcycle called "Brisk" from the Czech Republic. They are sold here in the U.S. mostly though high performance automotive tuners and boy do they run great. They are standard on all Lamborghinis that come from the factory so they must be good. They have no side electrode like the old marine plugs but have a round side "shroud" where the spark forms a much larger flame kernal than on any conventional side electrode plugs. The advantage is there is no need ever for plug indexing since there is no side electrode to block the combustion in the chamber and since they sit deeper in the center of the combustion chamber they give a most complete combustion ignition and burn sequence. They are very popular in stock car racing here in the US and certainly up to the task of firing a 103" H-D V-twin!

The Brisk BOR14LGS is the direct replacement for the Champion made H-D 6R12 plugs we use. Not cheap but there is supposedly a dyno proven, good 1-2 horsepower gain because of these plug's superior spark kernal leading to a more complete burn during each combustion cycle. I definitely think they contribute to a higher SOTP (Seat Of The Pants) feel in acceleration if anything.

Aussie,

Actually, the advantage of platinum is longer life, not shorter.  Platinum electrodes do not erode quickly like standard plugs, so the gap remains constant and the edges of the electrodes remain sharp.  Sharp edges = less voltage required to fire the plug.  As for a performance difference, however, it would be imperceptible if compared to a brand new conventional plug.

Hey Mikey, everyone has different 'seat' senses........who knows?  Maybe some can feel a one or two mph increase......I know I can tell if my rear wheel slides a quarter of an inch in the wrong direction.  [smiley=oops.gif] har!  spyder

Screamin Eagle Triple Platinum. Change em every time you change your oil as they wear out fast. Best plug for a 103 motor ridden hard (in my humble opinion) Plugs are a hard subject to discuss because they react to how your motor is tuned, how you ride, the gas you use. You guys in Tennessee have the best gas in the USA. The oxygenated crap they sell in Cal is just that, crap. By the way and I'm sure a lot of you know this Octane Booster glazes your plugs. Keep a 5 gallon can 108 octane Racing fuel around and add a gallon before you leave you garage, you'll find it helps more.

Cannabus Man recommended these to me at 2000Km. These plus a few more breakin miles and I've never looked back. Made a world of difference on how my 103 runs. Have 19,600 KM on these plugs and will change them out in the spring in the new riding season.
