Having Troubles Installing Lower Fairing on SERG3; Help
« on: December 21, 2009, 12:59:25 AM »

I bought FLT Non-Vented Lower Fairings on E-Bay and before I install the vents and paint I want to insure fit. The lower fairings came with mounting hardware. The problem seems to be the upper mounts. With no instructions and this being the first time I ever put lowers on a RG I am learning as I go. I installed the binder clamps on the back side of the fairing brackets/crash bar in place of the stock parts (it seemed like they are made to go there) first with the stud outboard and then with the stud inboard, neither way worked.  :-\

Currently I am thinking that the Lower Fairings & Binder Clamps may be for 98-03 FLTR models (p/n 58841-98)  :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: And I need p/n 58861-04

Not sure what to do next other than ask for help!!!!

   HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I assume you tried the right one first, that that hardest to get on.
the threads on those brackets are angled so there is no right or left but there is an up or down, and I'll assume you already tried playing with this.
here's what I would do, leave the stock clamps alone and dry fit the left side one first, line it up by sight, it should slip right on. notice where the hole in the fairing contacts the bracket,
now go to the right side, if you have highway pegs you may want to remove for now., the more times you install the easier it gets. now notice where the hole in the fairing contacts the bracket..
don't worry about the bottom mount for now.
now to install the top brackets, if you put threads going up , it will pull the fairing up, which you dont want, so try them angled down. and I used a thumb screw with a washer so as not to have to get a wrench in there. when you install the bracket, leave it a bit loose, you may want to adjust it so it gclears the upper fairing, use a dry erase marker to put reference marks.
I dont use those brackets on my Bike, I've come up with anotther design to moount the tops, rubber coated Ubolts

Larry;
I've looked at these stinkin' upper mounts and they seem to be symmetrical. The 1/4-20 stud is sticking out square in both planes :-\
Now what, I guess I will take a pic so you can see the mounts. Maybe it will be obvious after you see them. (see below)
I could make new ones that work, but if HD has them on the self I would rather go that route.

There is an interference fit between the bottom of the clamp and the lower fairing pocket that the clamp is supposed to seat in. I thing I will add some clearance by grinding the clamp (I can always re-anodize the aluminum clamp). The pencil is pointing to where the interference fit is.

Problem Solved,  :orange: :orange: :orange:
Larry; You were right on the money when you said the left side is easy and the right side is the b!tch. Slotted the hole 1/4" upward so the lower would drop down and put some clearance on the mounts. I like your idea of the U-Bolts, I think the kind that hold a cars universal joint in place would be perfect.
Vents are next.
   Thanks

This sight is awesome :orange: :orange:

the u-bolt set up does work well but I've only been using that setup when speaker pods and speakers are installed.
another hint on adjustments is you can move the upper fairing mounts out/in to give yourself some clearance, just make sure you measure from a center point and adjust each side equally

When you say out/in do you mean parallel with the crash bar? I did move them a bit but didn't want to flex the upper fairing to much. Both the left and the right side lower fairings seem to be equally spaced from the frame. My only concern I have now is trying to get the clearance equal on the LH & RH lower fairing (where it scopes ups) and the upper fairing. There is a 1/2" clearance on the LH and none on the RH side  :( I added a washer on the stud to move it back but that barely makes a difference. I'm getting ready to pop off the fairing to do a HW upgrade and thought maybe I could move the upper fairing forward slightly on the right and back slightly on the left :nixweiss: Save me the aggravation, since I can't reposition the crashbar what options are available? I thought I would be able to use a heat gun and reform the lower fairing lip slightly but evidently couldn't get enough heat on it to reform it back slightly. Any thoughts?

what is this ? Do you have a pic ?
It is allways very difficult to loosen and tighten the upper mount hand-screws .
