Nope. Got the Typhoon Maroon/Ruby Red combination. I'm not gonna ask what color has to do with performance.  :o

You can never please everyone, if you get a died in the wool Goldwinger, he will never like the CVO or any Harley for a matter of fact.  But if you get a true motorcycle enthusiast that has a love for two wheels, no matter what the brand then they will appreciate the CVO and work through any misgivings from the factory and enjoy the ride.

As a guy that has a lot of Harley's and other bikes as well, (including a GL1500 and GL1800 along with the Harley's, both Honda's are gone now) Goldwings are not without their faults either, ask the next goldwinger how much his bike was new and what he put into it to make it better.  The answer Will be OH I have over 35K in it maybe closer to 40.

The guy on the HD forum is one of the died In the wool goldwingers with blinders on.

I hear ya...and thanks for the info there...as well as here. If the CVO's have these nasty re-occuring problems, how come I see so many trade one in for another? Makes ZERO sense to me.

I was a bit surprised to hear about heat issues with the SE 110 motor, so I went on a fact finding mission. Glad I found this forum. No doubt, you will find un-happy bike owners on EVERY site. Just gotta filter out some info. I've put a total of 90 miles on this bike so far...so I will have to see for myself what changes...if any need to be made.
Once you go "CVO" there is no turning back. ;D Just like any other vehicle and those that have the money to upgrade/buy newer models.... when something new/different comes out they want it. :nixweiss:

Show this to your Goldwing guys.  This is just a partial list of the Imperial Rulers Issues.  Some of the issues require the motor to come out and the bike to be down for months if the dealer is a high volume one. This is not upto date, just a snapshot of the perfect wing they all brag about.

CVO was indeed your best choice.

The Heat issues evolve from the EPA restrictions and the engines changes to meet them. They are not "110" issues rather all the post 2007 Harley's with the o2 sensors installed. Just like all those smelly Catalytic converters our cars started getting in the 80's.

The closed loop runs a leaner air to fuel ratio and a lean engine is a Hot Engine.

The stock 96's also have the same issues and you're 08 would have had them as well.

The 110 is larger so it might be somewhat more noticeable but my 2010 110 doesn't run any hotter than my 2007 96 ci. My earlier 88 ci was much cooler but on a 90* day not sure it seemed that way :nixweiss:

Solution is to adjust the A/F ratio richer with a proper mixture as the pre 2007's had.

Congratulations on your purchase! What model did you buy?

Oh so true. I had been absent from motorcycling for 20 years when I bought my first Harley in '08. :o Now, I got the fever and I look forward to riding as much as possible. All I can say is....c'mon spring!!!

I was wondering about that. I changed the air cleaner and exhaust on my '08 FLHTC...but I don't know if it made much difference in engine heat. I'm not sure anything helps when you're sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Baltimore Beltway in the summer. You either tolerate the heat...or you don't ride!

Bought a lightly used '09 CVO Ultra.

Jerry, congratulations you got yourself a great bike!! We are a very honest group who share the good and the not so good experiences of riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. We do this in order to help our fellow Harley riders. Sometimes we do it just because we need to vent. I'm certain that Harley Davidson has learnt a lot from this website. Maybe even a few improvements have come about because of the good and bad experiences of real riders. Instant information is a great way to keep large corporation a little more honest.

Some answers to your questions depend on what you previously rode. Did you ride a Harley? If so was it a touring model? Have you ever upgrade or modified your engine in the past? Do you ride distances or shorter trips around town? Do you ride with a passenger?

Yes, the 110" engine will give off more heat than an 88", 95" or 103". In many ways the 2007 CVO 110" engine was the guinea pig and many improvements have come along since 2007. Other riders have already explained how you can remedy excess engine heat.

If you had owned an older model HD touring bike you will find that the '09 handles slightly better but you will also find that the '09 has a harsher ride. So you will feel the bumps much sooner on the 2009 than you would have felt them on an '08 or older model. You will hear a little more mechanical noise from the 110" repending on your speed and RMP. The ABS brakes introduced in 2008 are great!!! Simply said, ABS helps to make your ride a little safer.

By the way, did I mention that you have a great first name?  :)

Jerry

So far I'm impressed with this forum. Been getting honest, no nonsense answers to questions. I was out of motorcycling for 20 years when I bought an Electra Glide in 2008. So, I'm trying to catch up a bit.

I've done a few overnight trips...and I use my bike for commuting. Yes, my wife likes to ride too. So, I use my bike for everything. I'm not looking for optimum performance...I just want to be comfortable during long and short rides.

Actually changing the Exhaust and Air Cleaner can cause more heat. The remedy revolve around changing / Re mapping the Air to Fuel ratios. this is done by either adding an post ECM fuel management device like the Power Commander or V&H Fuel Pak or changing the Factory ECM settings using a tool like the TTS (SERT) or the Super SERT (Screamin Eagle Race Tuner)

There are other alternatives as well but to reduce the heat more fuel needs to be fed through the system at the correct timing. While it may not seem as such this is a simplification of the process.

Nothing's changed since HD had to comply with EPA. Been YEARS already! Used to be pipes, carb, ignition! Now it's pipes, breather, FI tune/remap! Basically, just set them puppies free!!! Best and cheapest bang for the buck. All performance gains after that are personal and more expensive. But those 3 things minimum, are MANDATORY IMO! ;)

I did all that. Purchased a SERT and a 'canned' EFI map after installing a Stage 1 AC and True Dual headers with Classic Slip-Ons. Bottom line...spent a good bit of money on mods and didn't feel a noticeable difference in heat. Did the bike perform better? Yes. Did it sound better? Yes. But, I wasn't looking for performance or more noise. I was looking for heat reduction and didn't get it. So, I'm a bit pessimistic about certain changes due to past experience.

I see there is a device called XiED by Nightrider which changes the A/F ratio and provides cooler exhaust temps. My search here on cvoharley has revealed lots of positive feedback. That may be the ticket.

I've heard the same stories about heat (and every other nitpick) for the last several years.  My flhtcuse3 has tons of heat on the right side that some might consider a problem when its over 90 degrees I'm and stopped at a light.  But once I'm moving I forget about it.  What am I gonna do, buy a Gold Wing (don't laugh, I rented one for a trip in southern utah and it is a damn nice vehicle)?

I've driven all the Harley cruisers (I rent bikes 3-4 times a year because I travel and will stay over a weekend just to ride some new country) and they all have heat.  Along with all the other 'stuff' you read in the various motorcycle forums about this and that problem, the worst I can even talk about with the Harley cruisers are:

1.  using a 1/2 helmet with no windshield is like getting decapitated at speed (the wind pulls the strap against your windpipe).  But with a full helmet, it's a blast and a completely different experience than your normal cruiser ride.
2.   Head buffeting because you have the wrong size windshield destroys any fun of riding.
