OK...Give me the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
« on: December 23, 2009, 07:18:00 PM »

I just picked up a lightly used '09 CVO Ultra last week. I'm hearing stuff about excess heat from the 110 engine and other horror stories. So...what is true...what is myth...and what would you suggest as the bare minimum mods to this awesome bike? Thanks in advance for the info. I'm new to this site...so be kind.

Is the bike still stock (exhaust/AC)? If not what mods have been done to it already?

As far as I can tell, still stock. The bike had less than 2200 miles when I took delivery.

Then you definitely want to change the pipes/mufflers, get a better AC, and tune it for starters. You can start by searching the site for Fullsac (mod to stock heads/mufflers), if you want a complete exhaust search Rinehart's, D&D, Vance & Hines.... there are plenty of threads already of what members have done it's going to be up to you which way you want to go.... but definitely change those three... and I'd also add getting the Syn 3 out of all three holes. For that you can go with Redline, Amsoil, Mobil1... again search those for info. With the changing of those things (Exhaust/AC/Fluids) your bike should run cooler, quieter, and an added bonus... more performance. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the info. I did all of your suggestions to the '08 FLHTC I traded-in.....Stage 1 A/C...V&H True Duals with Classic Slip-Ons...and a 'canned' EFI map. After all the $$$ I dropped on this bike I was hoping to avoid a repeat performance. Deja' vue all over again.................

I see you're not a fan of the synthetic fluids...I've heard good and bad. I used standard HD 20W-50 on the old bike, as do most of my friends. That's an easy change.

Welcome to the group  :orange:

Actually, all 3 oils d00d mentioned are synthetic.  Only way to go.

I'm a fan of synthetics... just not Syn3 (MoCo brand synthetics). I'm running Amsoil in my motor and Redline in my Tranny/Primary.... all of them are synthetic. :2vrolijk_21:

Jerry, do these sound like guys that are very unhappy with their CVOs?

That guy on HD Forums is a long time Goldwing rider (by his own admission) that stumbled onto a CVO by accident.  Wrong bike for him but it's not the horrrer story that he drew.  Like I said over there, changing the air cleaner, exhaust, adding a tuner and maybe cams is what we all do with regular model Harleys.....so no big deal there.  These little changes will make your bike run much cooler and still keep the motor very reliable.

I hear ya...and thanks for the info there...as well as here. If the CVO's have these nasty re-occuring problems, how come I see so many trade one in for another? Makes ZERO sense to me.

I was a bit surprised to hear about heat issues with the SE 110 motor, so I went on a fact finding mission. Glad I found this forum. No doubt, you will find un-happy bike owners on EVERY site. Just gotta filter out some info. I've put a total of 90 miles on this bike so far...so I will have to see for myself what changes...if any need to be made.
