Suspension and New Frame Question
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:12:22 PM »

Happy New Year Everyone. I have a question. I own a 2007 SEUC, I really like the bike, it runs great and I love the way it looks. My question is-If I replace the front and rear shocks, would my bike ride close to a new Electra Glide that is stock? I want to bike to ride a bit smoother. I might also consider adding the frame stabilizer being offered by progressive. The comparison-a 2007 SEUC with progressive 440 shocks, the new progressive front shock kit and possibly the progressive frame stabilizer vs a new 2010 Electra Glide Classic-Comparing ride quality only. Does anyone have any experience with this comparison? Thanks in advance for your input.

No. If you replace your suspension on the '07 it will ride better than to '10. Add the Traxxion Dynamics to the front end for a much superior ride. Even with a 2010, this will need to be done to stop the forks from compressing while coming to a stop.

I will second that,
Improving an old frame with smart suspension parts will surpass a new frame with stock components.

The real question is, how much better is the new frame with upgraded suspension?

I must disagree with AJ and Keats.

My 09 SEUC rides and handles better than my traxxion and progressive equipped 03. (lots better and my 03 handles good)

No offense, but why is it that the guys that own pre 09 bikes always think their bikes handle better after spending money on them than the 09 .

Spend the same amount on an 09 or 10 and they will only get better.

My 01, 03 and 05 handle very good but I could only hope that they were as stable and handle as well as my 09 SEUC.

We all have our opinions and mine is based on actual riding experience of the 3 pre 09's and my 09 SEUC sitting in my garage.

Scott see my above post.
It's not an exact apples for apples comparison but very close.
I think you will get the drift!

Well I sat on the '09 frame for 1100 miles so I think I can give a fair and objective opinion. I'd take the ride of my Traxxion equipped '07 over a new frame any day. Of course we all know when I get a new frame bike, it'll only be a matter of time before it heads to GA for the Traxxions anyway.

Thanks everyone
I was thinking of the new progressive front suspension kit, it's less money but looks like it will do a good job. I don't do a lot of aggressive cornering anymore, I am more interested in a nice ride, a little smoother ride. For me, I can't justify the expense of trading in my 07 on a 10 when I can at least come close with the upgrades. If money was no object, I would buy a new 10, I would rather have the money for riding.

Thanks again everyone

I did exactly what you are considering with my '05 SEEG.  13" rear Progressive 440's, changed the damping rods back to "stock" (+ 1") and added Progressive springs, and went with the Bagger Brace stabilizer.  I like the result.  A bit taller - which is OK for me and GREATLY imporved handlimg and ride.  As I did this all at once, I couldn't tell if any one thing made a difference but I sure am happy with the overall result.

I have an 06, and I have to agree with SSB! No matter how you try the 09/10 is far superior!

What are you basing your statement on? Do you own an '09 or '10? Have you put any saddle time on either? If you did, did they have the Traxxions and/or Progressives work done? Does your '06 have any fork work done?
The question posed was: "If I replace the front and rear shocks, would my bike ride close to a new Electra Glide that is stock?".
The simple answer to that question is no, it would not ride "close" to a new (presumably 2010) Electra Glide. If the shocks were replaced on an '07 it would in fact ride better than a stock SEUC⁵.

Ahhhhh AJ.
As a fantasy of hope, you can call it anyway you like.
But as you said,
Quote
The question posed was: "If I replace the front and rear shocks, would my bike ride close to a new Electra Glide that is stock?".

I have done what the question asked and the ride and handling is good but the ride and especially the handling of my 09 SEUC is far Superior.
That's based on 51,000 miles on the 03 Classic and 23,000 miles on the 09 SEUC.
But as good as the 09 is, I will ride the 03 Classic to the 110th.
Somethings are a given!

Chip do you also have a brace on the 03? This is a big part of the new frame, they have reduced most of the swing arm flex.

I had an 06 with Progressive front and rear................good ride.

Doesn't compare to the 09, bottom line............. there different bikes all around. That's why it's hard to make the comparison.... :nixweiss:

I want to thank everyone for there input. Several folks have compared 2003 or earlier frames to the 2007. I realize the 2007 frame is not as good as the 2009 and 2010, the 2007 is stronger than the 2003 frames. Most people don't realize the factory used stronger tubing on the 2007 and I presume 2008 frames. They also made other improvements over the years. My goal is to improve the ride quality of my 2007 SEUC, I am happy with the handling, just want to improve the ride. It's hard for me to justify the expense of trading in my 07 for a 2010 when I can upgrade the suspension on my 07 and receive a great ride, close by most accounts to the new bike. Thanks again, I really appreciate everyone's input.

Here's my take on the Progressive "Upgrade" springs for the front.....................................You can do better.

If your going to go into the tubes make sure your money is spent wisely, personally the improvement wasn't worth the hassle.

Now that's my take on an 06 SEUC and did not use the stabilizer.
