redline 20/60

For what it's worth, and this is only MY experience and MY opinion.
I used 20/50 Mobil 1 in the motors of all my bikes till I got the 09 SEUC.
The Mobil 1 (IMHO) worked well in the 01 SERG, the 03 Classic and the 05 SEEG but in the 09 with the 110 it seemed to thin out more than in the other bikes.
I changed to 20/60 Redline in the motor of the 09 SEUC and it seemed to run cooler, not as thin and the motor was more quiet than with the Mobil 1.
It made sense to me to keep all 4 bikes the same so the Redline line of products have gone in all three holes in all 4 bikes.

I use Mobil1 because you can get it in almost any town, just in case I need oil while on the road. Mobil1, Amsoil, and Red line are probably the top lubricants for your motor.

From my understanding and talking to people who deal with oil for a living, Harley has built and designed there motors, primary and transmissions to run on 20w-50 weight oils. (Hence syn3 in all 3 holes).Although I would never use it in my bike.(Mobile1 instead) Running a heavier oil in anything that was not designed for just creates more heat. Old school thinking was motor oil in motor and gear oil in transmission. But motors and transmission are all changing. Motor oils in your own cars are now thinner(0w-20,5w-20,5w-30). Metals and designs are different than years ago and cars are lasting longer than ever before. I'm not an engineer by any means, but I am sure Harley knows what they are doing. If we did not believe it we would not be riding the BEST DAMN MOTORCYCLE in the world. IMO

Here is a chart to help clear up any questions people may have on motor vs gear oil viscosity.
SAE gear and engine numbers cover the same range of viscosities; for example, an SAE 30 engine oil has approximately the same viscosity as a SAE 85W gear oil.

Pertaining to this thread I'm not sure which comment is funnier.
But both have me laughing!
Well done!

Thanks for the replies. I have to say I am surprised by the lopsided results. I did a search on this subject before posting this poll, but thought it was worthwhile to revisit the issue.

To me, it seems unusual that a thinner oil (synthetic) could protect as effectively as a thicker one. I have noticed over the years that the automobile industry has consistently moved to lighter multi-weight oils. I remember when 10W-40 was the standard. Now, that has gone the way of the dinosaur. Apparently fluid technology and engine designs have progressed to the point where my 'old-school' theories no longer apply. Looks like I will keep synthetic in all three holes as most of you suggest. I will have to check the availability of brands like Redline and Amsoil in my area.

Thanks Again
Jerry
