My next 4 wheeler
« on: January 10, 2006, 07:37:54 PM »

I am a long time Camaro fan and currently have a 68 RSSS that I love and have been anticipating a new Camaro with a look of the old style like the new mustang has, I was excited to see it's concept debut this year at the North American Auto Show in detroit last week only to be dissapointed again by Chevy but I did fall in love, with a dodge.....and it matches the Pumpkin SEEG to boot :)

CJ...Sure comes close to the "must have" list....they had a blurb on the Speed Channel about it the other evening.  Impressive.

Given the styling choices that have come out of GM in recent years I was actually pleasantly surprised by the new Camaro.  Admittedly it doesn't carry the lines of the first genearation F-Body forward the way that the new Challenger or even Ford's retro Thunderbird carried their legacies.  But it doesn't suck either.

That one looks better - the one I saw from the autoshow was silver and to me that front end and the lines just looked like some of the caddys they have these days - the Mustang and this new Dodge are just beautiful renditions of the originals and I had hoped for something like that, but that red one could grow on me - though chaevy is saying maybe 2009 - and dodge might be here for 2007, I will keep in touch with a friend that has a local dealership and see when I can get on a waiting list as these will likely be hard to get. I think there was a union contract problem with the camaro plant in canada that says they have first crack at any camaro, its been shutdown for a while so I don't see it getting built any time soon.

The plant you mention hasn't just been shut down; it's been razed.  Part of the UAW Canada contract and an agreement between GM and Quebec was that for Provincial investment in that particular plant it would build the Camaro.  At least partially to avoid certain contractual entanglements as a result, not terribly long after the last Camaro was built the wrecking ball began doing it's worst to the old Camaro plant.  Last I heard it is now just a large flat spot.

I wonder if the union still has a claim against them that requires any new camaro to be built by them?

As I remember the contract issues the real tie-in was to the plant.  UAW Canada just seemed to assume that the work was theirs if that work must be in a Quebecois plant.  Razing the plant after it was idled was justified by GM by saying the property was worth more to others bare so they'd not have the old facilities to contend with.  But it also removed them from the "where will the Camaro be built" entanglement.

CEEJ,
I have always loved the '69 Camaro as the best of all the lines, but my love is gone....A 1970 1/2 RS SS 396 Camaro, 1 of only 410 ever, numbers match, 402ci Th400, Mom drove it for years before I got it. Many tickets later I sold it to the owner of ARP racing products. Mis that car every day.

Got my new Car & Driver yesterday in the mail and was blown away by the article & photos of the prototype Challenger. It looks like Chrysler is listening to their public. They are gonna offer it with an optional 500hp Motor.
Having owned my first GTO my senior year of high school, Ive owned 30+ since. Some of them show cars and some of them rats. I have visions of GM letting the team that did that Challenger go to work on a retro 64/65 GTO.  To say that GM let the pontiac enthusiasts down with the "New" GTO is an understatement. They have rolled back production on this years GTO because of poor sales. I wish that GM could get it right like Ford & Chrysler have. The Camaro pictured above is a good looking car but I think it missed the mark..

You know with a handle like mine, I can not let this topic go without comment. Last September, when I first heard of the possible resurrection of the Challenger, My wife and I went into the local dealership and told the manager that we were ready to order our next new car. He sat down with pen in hand and asked what we were interested in. I said an "09" Challenger. Then I explained to him what I was talking about. It was news to him but he said that when he went into the next regional sales meeting he would let them know that they had one sold. My last Challenger was a red "71" convertible with a 340 and slap-stick automatic. White top and black leather interior. I finally got discouraged with fighting rust and sold it much too cheap.

Also meant to comment on the new GTO, The styling is wrong but it will run. One of the auto magazines did a heads up between the Goat and a 6.1 Hemi (425HP) Charger and the GTO won the drag race. With lagging sales, it is a bargain to buy versus the $43,000 tag on the Charger. The writers of the article did prefer the Charger over all. Better road manners or some such nonsense.
