Not yet.  The painter gave me a quote on the cost and is now trying to "extort" another $400 to do the same job.  Hopefully we'll get it sorted out this week and I can get this project finished.  I'll keep you updated.  Whenever you mention the word "CUSTOM", you'd better be prepared to bend over and grab your ankles!!

Yeah how about it.  I think custom and expensive are synonyms.

I'm going through a Harley dealer and my stance is that they gave me a price quote and they should stick by it since nothing has changed.  They knew EXACTLY what they were quoting...it's not like they're a Honda dealer...

Ok, I'll give my 2 cents worth.  In my opinion, if you change any major part of the bike, ie, anything that cannot be taken off, then its not a CVO. There is only, at least  on the 2005 models, only 1200 and somewhat per color. But it really doesn't matter because its yours to do with whatever you want. You would have to keep this bike for at least 30 or more years for the bike to be considered a collectable and at this point, the bike would have to be as it was from the factory.  Ok, I'll shutup.

If your original CVO tins are good why not buy new tins and paint those? I would keep the originals for resale purposes.

A friend of mine recently took the plunge (after much consideration) and got rid of the leather Tour Pak on his '07 SEUC, replacing it with the new custom painted Tour Pak pictured here.

Do you still consider this bike a CVO?  I do... With all due respect to other '06 & '07 SEUC owners, I think my friend increased the resale value on his bike.  Although some would disagree.

Bottom line is - It's your bike and I say make it your own.  Besides, as you mention "I will NEVER sell it", so the argument regarding resale value does not come into play.

Go for it and enjoy YOUR real "custom" CVO!

If you bought a CVO for the resale value, then I think you bought it for the wrong reason.  I bought mine just for the pure thrill of owning one.  I couldn't care less about the resale value.  If you sell anything, it is only worth what you can get someone to pay for it...no matter what anyone or any book tells you.  Changing items on the bike doesn't change the fact that it was made as a CVO either.  No matter what, it will always remain a CVO.

:soapbox:I think if you bought your CVO for resale you wouldn't even ride it and just leave it inthe box.  If you personalize it most of those things will usually be value added unless your nuts and some people thinks thats all CVO owners.   LOL     ride safe jdo

I would think to find the answer look at restored cars. If they are repainted with a non stock theme, you change the interior or wheels they are no longer original and lose value. To maintain the true value I think the paint should be left stock but like others have said with a great repaint it would be one of a kind. If you are interested in maintaining the true value of your CVO a non factory looking repaint however may hurt you.

As far as resale, I meant the ability to sale it faster because you still have the original parts. Let's face it we never really plan on selling our toys but bad things happen ie health issues ect.

Sometimes the unexpected just happens and it's always good to have a back up plan.

The VIN will always make it a CVO . . . can't change that (well, a chop shop could).

If you never plan to sell it, who cares besides you what the paint scheme is?  The only time it would make a difference is come resale time . . . and since you will be dead because you won't resell it while you are alive . . . then the value is an estate issue, and you will not care. 8)

"Never" sometimes comes to all of us and is a long time to be so sure of . . . buy a second set of tins and have them custom painted . . . then when you resell when "never" comes, you have simply added to the value being able to throw the original factory painted tins in with the sale.

Just what I would do.

I sure wouldn't have purchased a CVO if the paint job was the only thing different about the bike.  If they really came with one of a kind custom paint jobs, then there paint job would be something of real value.  You may get the argument from a dealer that you've cut the value, but selling to a private buyer, it's all going to depend upon whether the paint job puts a sparkle in the buyer's eyes.  A CVO with a truly custom paint job may bring more $ when you try to sell it.  I sure hope it's a killer paint job, since that yellow is an awesome look.

If he still has the leather Pak then it's a CVO, if he threw it away he may get some arguments. Bottom line: he didn't destroy anything intrinsically CVO, he only added something. If you repaint, that's another story and not comparable. Although the bike may be more functional and weather resistant, I seriously doubt he increased the resale value.

It's sure interesting to see how many different opinions you can get on a subject.  Someone said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I think it is in the mind.  If you "think" it is, then it is.  It doesn't matter what someone else "thinks", or it shouldn't matter anyway.  One thing I "think" we all can somewhat agree on is that we have some awesome looking machines and we're among the lucky ones to be able to own them...and customize them too.

I was down at the dealer on Saturday and finally got everything straightened out regarding pricing, etc.(the painter wanted about $400 more than he quoted and the dealer has about 3x the labor into the bike than he estimated).  They have agreed to do the job for the original quote (did they think I was going to pay for it?).  Hopefully everything will be done soon and I can get some pictures posted.  I guess deep down I knew it wasn't going to be an easy thing.  Just deciding to have the work done took months to decide.  Anyway, I can't wait to see it...
