I have also found that ensuring the bike is in neutral helps. Dunno why [smiley=nixweiss.gif] just does. (Could it be something like the throw out bearing?)

Even with a new jackshaft starter drive gear the starter still makes noise when engine is hot.  I will try starting hot with throttle cracked and keeping starter button fully depressed until engine starts as others have stated.  If those ideas don't help, it could be the starter, jackshaft and associated parts, and/or me.

I had to have the ring gear replaced on my '03 SERK before I ever took delivery.  The very first time I tried to start the bike at the dealer, the started didn't engage.  It was a very intermittent problem.

After they took the primary apart, they found that the backside of the ring gear was not machined properly all the way around  (the machinist must have taken a lunch break while working on my ring gear!!!!).

Anyway, they replaced the clutch basket/ring gear assembly and no more problems.
