And Next----Warrantys
« on: January 29, 2010, 03:58:32 PM »

OK, so we got the insurance covered. I see that a lot of you all have 5 and 7 yr extended with wheels an tires. I have a five/with. A lot of the same have done cams, heads,pipes--and so on. Why buy the warranty if you know that the Moco wont honor the warranty. Not just for the wheels, although it may pay for itself that way. Is there a rider for the warranty that covers these Mods, or do you just take a chance?

Some of it is common sense, if the radio fails, the exhaust did not cause it.  I had an issue with the leaking heads and HD said the exhaust caused the heads to fail, go figure.  It's a crapshoot.

Service writer at my dealer said "if it comes in stock for warranty, we don't know different"
that precludes cams for me. Dealer does service, but will NEVER see my trailer hitch.

I actually had the dealer do all the major mods on my last bike.  They give 25% off all parts and accessories they install during the winter months, (Nov ~ MAr).  They said since they did the mods, don't worry about warranty coverage.  They always seem to take care of me.   :2vrolijk_21:

For the first time EVER on ANYTHING I bought an extended warranty on my CUSE5.  To much electronics on this one, heck the heated seat and grips are reason enough.   Today I even bought the prepaid service plan.  Saves roughly $400 over the services out to 10K PLUS gives me priority scheduling for service/problems which is nice during the busy months.  I never thought I would go this route, but I did.  My bike is stock, but will soon be adding a hitch that will come off (and the wiring harness) before any service.  I think I'll add some nice flag pole attachments to the hitch and will only have to remove the wiring harness, which can be rigged up for EASY and quick "ditching" before the dealer see it.   So I have the 7/with tires, and the service plan but by golly I still don't wear corporate HD clothing chit, I do have a tad bit of pride left.  No offense meant to anyone, just my way of doing things.

Why buy the warranty if you know that the Moco wont honor the warranty. Not just for the wheels, although it may pay for itself that way. First, there is a difference between warranty and extended service agreements.  The warranty is provided by H-D to the purchaser at no additional charge, and is subject to Federal law.  The Extended Service Plan is optional at a significant extra cost, and is administered by someone other than Harley-Davidson.  It is also not regulated under the Federal warranty laws.  Coverage for the warranty is not necessarily the same as coverage under the ESP, so it might be wise to ask all your questions about what's covered and what isn't before you spend the $1500 average price.

Typically, minor external mods like mufflers and air cleaners have never been reason for the MoCo to void someone's warranty.  However, with tougher emission rules in effect it is always possible that any changes you make that would cause the bike to not be in compliance will also cause H-D to refuse warranty service.  This isn't just because they're cheap SOB's looking for a way to duck their responsibility, it's also because they don't want the EPA to find them complicit in your tampering which would subject them to some huge fines.  I would suggest that any changes you make, if you want to be confident that your warranty will truly protect you, be only minor external changes that can be easily undone.  Cams, heads, compression, etc. are best left alone if the warranty is really all that important to you.

Some folks will tell you they had the dealer do all kinds of major mods and the dealer told them they would still cover it under warranty.  Be aware of a couple fairly important points.  The dealer has no right to alter the factory warranty, or to make the factory responsible for their statements.  So the only way that dealer can cover the nonlegal modifications under warranty is to submit fraudulent claims to H-D, or to pay for the repairs themselves.  Trust that dealer if you want, but don't be surprised if you get hung out to dry.  And btw, that dealer is also guilty of emission system tampering if he does anything that isn't an approved street legal kit.  Last time I checked, fines could run up to $10,000 per vehicle per day of noncompliance.

If you decide to do the heavy duty mods and blow off the powertrain warranty, that doesn't mean you also have to lose the rest of the warranty or ESP.  Those mods shouldn't affect the warranty or ESP as it relates to the other systems, such as electrical, paint, suspension, etc.

Jerry (grc) is right on the money with his response! My approach the warranty service is this:

Maintain a relationship with a dealer ( buy some parts, have routine service done, throw the service manager and tech a tip for good service done, etc). Don't be a dickhead! If your dealer sucks, try another.
Save all receipts if you do your own service
Save ALL your original parts if you have done the usual improvements (pipes, mufflers, tuner, a/c).
[TTS Mastertune is a plus since you save the stock tune and can easily restore to ECM leaving no trace of Mastertune.]
If major problem develops, restore to stock, flatbed to dealer, say nothing!

If major mods are performed, your on your own, but you knew that. Having an ongoing dealer relationship should help with any warranty issues that are not engine / drive train related.

Good Luck
Tom P.

PS   The promises your dealer made to you when he did the changes don't mean beans when you break down 2000 miles from home on a long awaited trip.
