Iron Butt plate from old scoot to new scoot?
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:08:22 PM »

As my bride constantly opines, I tend to overthink things at times...but here goes.  I made a tour pack plaque outta the Iron Butt license plate frame for my old Ultra (which made the IB ride) last nite I was gonna put it on the back of my new "Punkin" scooter and got to wunderin..."does the plate go with the scooter that made the trip or the rider and transfer it bike to bike?"  It's gonna mount on the back very lower section of TP.  What say Yee?

It is the butt that makes the ride not the bike

I would agree. The honor travels with the butt not the bike.

Transfer it.  You wouldn't tear the IB patch off a jacket because you no longer have the bike.  You earned it.

Stay with the bike????
No way!
You earned the IB status not the new rider of your old scoot.

Once an Iron Butt, always an Iron Butt.

You are who you are, and nobody can take that away from you, no matter where you go or what you ride.  :2vrolijk_21:

No one can accuse you of being a POSEUR  :huepfenlol2:

You earned it, not the bike, I have changed bikes since my Iron butt ride, but have not cut my patch off my vest.

I've done a "couple" IB rides, and used to be fairly acti ve in the community.   General consensus is the backer stays with the bike, and you've got to do a ride on the bike before it "earns" the backer. But no one is gonna call you on it.  I'll be doing a ride on mine before I add mine.

You are the iron butt. The bike got you there, but if you hadn't gone the distance the bike would have sat there!!!!!!
So my friend sport that plaque where that patch you earned it  :2vrolijk_21:

Riding a large touring bike it really doesn't make a difference, and no one will think anything about it... but do the ride on a touring bike and put the backer on an 883, a hard tail, or something like that, and you are misrepresenting yourself... because it will be assumed you did the ride on that bike.

In the "general population" it really isn't going to be a big deal... especially with the entry-level plate backer.

I'm a dyed in the wool Iron Butt Association member & rider. I say it's the rider who takes the risk and deserves the plate on whatever bike he or she rides. If someone buys a CVO, they deserve to display the 110 Screamin' Eagle logos and medalions that come with the bike. If you sold the bike is it right that the new owner deserves to display an IB plate on the motorcycle when that person isn't an IB member but bought a bike that was on an IB ride? No. Is it right if you buy a motorcycle that you didn't do an IB ride on but has a plate on it that identifies you as a bona fide Iron Butt Association member? Yes.

If it stayed with the bike anyone could buy the plate with the bike without having riden over 100 miles.

Yes, I'd remove the backer from a bike before I sold it...

That was one of the first things stripped, definitely not on the old bike...just thought it'd look better on the bike than the wall.  I sent the question to Michael Kneebone (IBA pres.) maybe he'll respond, NOW there's Makers Mark bottle ridin' on the outcome.  I say it'll be OK on the new bike, my bud 7 time IBA rider says don't put it on...REALLY hope he's wrong!
