Red line Tranny/Primary Syn3 motor

I have purchased red Line 20/50 for my next oil change. My deStealer Service Rep told me that RL Motor oil was too thin and would leak out of the seals and gaskets. Has anyone ever heard or experienced this?

Oh Boy  :o
Does your dealers have any experience with that ? Many Riders here use the Redline Product.... By far superior than the Syn 3
More troubling is the consumer is told this from the dealer level, If they choose to use the Mo Co products exclusively then that's what the response should be. Not some elementary, not knowing what they are talking about  :'(

Use Spectro, Amsoil, Redline, Mobil 1 gear oil, any of these will be better for your transmission than HD syn.
IMO for your engine HD syn is okay for 2500, 3000 oil mile changes. But your motor will run cooler with some of the other oils that people have recommended.
You may also be saving yourself a little $$$ also. (As if any one cares about that)
For the primary HD syn would be fine but many of the others brands specific for primary use will work better.
Personally I would not use HD syn even in my ex wife’s lawn mower.
Also if it matters to you HD syn is manufactured by Citgo. (Venezuela--Hugo Chávez)

I'm sure this has been beat to death but what does everone think about Syn 3 in all three holes. I've been told by another party that it should only be used in the engine. The old heavier stuff should be used in the primaries and trans. What to do??

You mean SIN...In all three holes...

I run, and recommend, Amsoil 20/50 in crank, Redline HeavyShock in Tranny, Amsoil SuperShift ATF in Primary. Shifts like Butter.

If that is what you have for a dealership service contact, all I can say is you need to find a new dealership immediately.  Any supposed service person who is either dumb enough or dishonest enough to use that line is someone I would refuse to ever do business with, even if he was the last person in 100 miles.  The only thing that's too thin is this clown's brain.

Gotta use Mobil 1 is all three.  My buddy's dad was the project manager for Mobil when they developed it.  It still is superior to ALL other oils.  Just check on all the hyper performance cars that factory fill it.  The reason why it doesn't come standard in other cars is that it costs too much.  Harley doesn't make oil.  They buy the Syn 3 from Castrol or someone else because again it costs them less than Mobil 1 (and sell it for about the same price).  I remember a report he once showed me where they ran taxicabs 100,000 miles in NY without changing the oil (just topping off as needed) then tore down the engines.  Most parts were still in tolerance for new parts after all that abuse.  He wanted to claim more miles between oil changes but their Marketing folks said no as they wouldn't sell as much oil.  Clearly, Mobil 1 is the best.  Regarding comparing it to regular oil, its hands down better (as is Syn 3).

Glad to see someone else on here from Knoxville, I went round and round about oil with the arseholes at Knox H-D, they talked me into changing from SYN3 to dino oil, I did then back to SYN3 then i changed to Mobil 1 in all 3 holes, better i think tahn SYN3 or dino, Then i changed to Redline in all three holes, As far as the motor oil can't tell a whole lot of difference, maybe a little quitier but can not tell a lot of difference as far as the heat, also can't tell any difference as far as primary goes but a GREAT BIG DIFFERENCE in the Tranny, Smooooother, Quitier and maybe it would do this before i changed to RL and never tried it but can float the gears with clunking or chunking. As far as your Service Rep telling you that RL Motor oil is thinner, Just by looking at it it does not look near as thin as SYN3, They just don't carry RedLine and want to sell you what they have in stock.

If i bought a new bike today the first oil change at 1,000 miles i would change it over to RedLine.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I run one form or another of Mobil 1 in all my vehicles, with the exception of my diesel truck.  I've ran Mobil 1 in all three holds in all of my past four HD's and have had no reason to switch to anything else.  I can't quantify whether it's better than any other synthetic oil on the market, but I have had no problems related to its use and it is one of the more readily available synthetic oils on the market.  So I'll continue to to use Mobil 1.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bad mouthing Mobil 1 at all, First time i used it was in a vette that i had and had no problems at all, but it seemed to get very thin in these Harley's, maybe because they run so hot  :nixweiss:, We just bought a new Acura and i am thinking about running Mobil 1 in it but will just have to wait and see what the dealer uses. I may go back to Mobil 1 motor oil for my bike it is alot eaiser to find, but will stay with RL for Tranny and Primary.

Still say try Redling in the trans. Try it once, bet you won't go back!! I think 2Lane had a picture when he was upgrading to a 6speed of the original gears coming out with Redline all over them, stuff really clings and because it's red you can really see it. :2vrolijk_21:

Porthole (Duane) had pictures too....

Piqued my interest there Don.

Went back and looked at my pics

If you all recall, I am using red Line shockproof and at this tear down the bike had been sitting for a bit more then 4 months.

I would have to think that the bearings are getting an oil bath - even if it is 90w.
