American Legend or Bushtec Trailer??
« on: February 20, 2010, 12:31:58 AM »

Ok, I'm looking into a trailer to pull behind my 09 SERG.  I've narrowed it down to American Legend or Bushtec.  There is a lot of experience with trailers on this forum so, before I decide, thought I would throw it out to get some comments.

Have only pulled a Bushtec so can't offer a comparison.  Anecdotally have heard no complaints from American Legends users though.

My own experience with a Bushtec Roadstar is that it's a great tool to have.  Pulls easy.  The guys that say "you don't know it's back there" are overstating just a bit.  But only a little.  You hardly know it's back there and rarely is it in any way detrimental.  In some circumstances it actually stabilizes the ass end of the bike though.

About a 3 mpg hit on fuel economy.  The small difference is more than made up for in the utility it adds and the crap you don't have to buy on a longer trip because you can carry so much with you.  After having used mine for awhile now it quickly became on of those things that would be hard not to have for trips any longer than long weekenders.

I know you did not mention N-Line trailers, but that is what I am going to get when I get the finance company (aka the wife) to pay for it.  I like the fact it is only 30 inches wide, it will fit in my garage with no problems.

I have a new Bushtec on order. It should be ready in a couple of weeks and yes I'll post pics as soon as I pick it up. If you live any where close, go check out the factory. They are more than happy to show you around. I'm sure the Ameerican Legend is a great trailer but the Bushtec paint jobs that match the CVOs are amazing. The trailer I pulled behind my 06 Ultra was a Fibro Concept, it's axele design was the same as the Legend and it pulled great. It all comes down to personel preferance. I,ve traveled on ten day trips with and without a trailer and if possible will never be without.

I've been pulling a Bushtec for just over 20 years and have only 1 issue with it.  I hate to have to adjust the air suspension to each load, other than that it's a good trailer.   American Legend rigs seem to visually fit with Harley better, and their paint matching is also top notch.  A/L has a better latch, open/close than Bushtec.  6 of one, half a dozen of another...........

I have only used an American Legend and I too am not in a position to compare.

I enjoyed many years & miles pulling my AL all over the country and it was a great trailer that never let me down.  I ended up selling it when my wife started to ride her own Ultra and therefore luggage space was no loner an issue.

Love that trailer and the fellow who purchased it form me has put many more miles on it without any problems.

Good luck with you decision and I'm sure whichever one you choose will be a nice added feature and perform very well for you... They are both wonderfully built trailers.

I have a Bushtec Quantum.  I have a riding buddy that pulls an American Legend.  We are both happy with our purchases, but IMO, the Bushtec has superior suspension over rough roads.  Following my buddy, I sometimes watch his trailer bounce...and over the same roads he states my trailer does not bounce.

But an honest opinion is I don't think you can go wrong with either trailer...both are solid construction and quality trailers.   :2vrolijk_21:

I've located an A/L used for a good price.  What can I expect to pay in order to paint it to match my CVO?  Going to call around today and see if I can get some estimates and then compare vs a new one painted by the manufacturer.

Black would look good with your bike if custom paint is a deal breaker, but you already know what will happen.  :P   The only thing I could say about choosing is that Bushtec's tires are really hard to replace on the road and in my case are no longer available.  Doc

In the past few days I have decided to sell mine, I ride alone now days and am gonna try and travel light which for me, is a major undertaking!  I'm tired of not having room in the garage since this ol house was built in 1926 and the garage is set up for a model A.  You guys with big garages and shops are so lucky.  We have an amazing city/lake and mountain view but totally lacking in the garage department.

I have had an american legend for over 7 years now and have pulled it all over the US, in all sorts of weather and road conditions, including very tight uphill and downhill twisties. I found myself one time in a flooded out area where i had to manuver over rocks to get out of it and I will say that it has impressed the heck out of me. I have four buddies that have the bushtec and the only complaints that I have heard from them is the adjustment issue based upon loading and because the BT is rounded and the AL is squared, we seem to think the AL will fit mor per cubic foot of space. I have used it to camp and just for long trips when we motel it. I pulled it behind a 2003 Ultra with the big bore kit and had no problems. I now have a 201o cvo Ultra and my trailer is at AL as we speak to have it painted to match, They do a incredible job. They just finished a 2010 in the red with flamers and it turned out great. I prefer the AL for the Harley look, but the BT is a good trailer as well. The paint for the CVO is $2400 and they do a complete tear down as well as replacing the tiurn lights with billet CVO type and the fenders are replaced with the CVO type with the slotted lights.

Don't forget to post pics when you get your trailer back.  :2vrolijk_21:

As a prior American Legend owner, I would be interested in seeing the finished product.

Bushtecs are great if you don't mind screwing around with the air everytime you change the load.  Sold my bushtec and bought one that did not need adjusted.  A/L is great as well.
