I would work at one after I retire.  For me it wouldn't be about the money, but more about being around the bike culture!!

Most of what is being said is true.I have worked at two different dealerships for about 3 years each. I work in sales and it is easy for me because I love sales/ But make no mistake, the work can be demanding, the pay is not good at all and you definitely get your riding time cut big time, especially weekends. Benefits are very costly if available at all.You will learn a lot. Some of which will disappoint you. Also, make no mistake .it IS a buisness.Unless you are independently wealthy or have a retirement or otherwise decent income,do not expect to live well. A few bike sales people owner and general manager and department heads make decent money. Everyone else is sucking wind.If you notice, most employees are older and usually military retired. It is not by accident. I enjoy it and dont need the salary to survive. If I did I could not afford to be there. I do enjoy going to work very casual and I love getting up for work. I have NEVER had a bad day because I LOVE IT. JuST MAKE SURE YOU CAN AFFORD TO BE THERE.There is always a lot of turnover because the pay is as bad as it gets. Now if you ever get to work for THE MOTOR COMPANY,jump all over it.It is the opposite of dealers and the pay ,conditions and benefits are very top shelf and first class. Hope this helps.

In 1999 I retired from a job up north and moved to Ft Myers Fl, I took a year off and rode my bikes all over the place....first time in 27 years i had ever had an extented period of time off. I bought a new 2000 SERG from the local dealer here in town...after being in and out of the dealership quite a bit, the GM offered me a job in the sales Dept. All the previous comments about cutting into weekend ride time are true. The dealership sort of counts on the fact that you want to be in the motorcycle lifestyle, and that you will be willing to sacrafice, time...decent money...decent benefits for the privlege of being around something you are passionate about. I did not last long in this position, I am not one to jump around on jobs...in high school I worked at a local for 4 years..graduated and got a job in the natural gas bussiness where I worked for 27 years...I lasted with the dealership around one month...it was a total grind.....But here's what I learned...It is WAY more fun to ride, maintain..obsess...motorcycles than it is to try an sell em. Worst job I have had. Got a job in here Ft Myers back in the natural gas bussiness 10 years ago, have been with it ever since, loving life here in SWFL :bananarock:

Computers were my hobby and I made it my career.  Now I hate computers because I have to deal with them all the time.  Not mention the things you get asked by your friends, like fixing the computer, which one to buy, start a forum  :confused5:  ;D.  Over all, I wish I'd kept the two seperate.

On the other hand, if you're sure it won't become a headache either becasue you're haveing problems with the co-workers or over spending the paycheck, etc., it sure would be nice to do something you loved everyday.

been working for local dealership for 8 yrs in canada and love it. i take pride in my work/job. purchased my own 2009 fltrse3-so i can drive it my way and when i want too. its hard to sell service when you dont have a clue what your talking about or are up on things. ie warranty recalls, parts up dates, new products, quick fixes  etc...you have to ride the product top appericate it......

Well said. Product knowledge is the key, weather you sell dog food or Rolls Royce. People will not buy from a person  who doesn't have a clue what it is that they are selling

As I told many folks I worked with, I see no sense at all in retiring just so I can take another job.  Most that do so wind up working for peanuts compared to what they earned on their prior job, get no benefits, and tend to be the first to go if their new employer decides to retrench.  If you still need the money, don't retire.

On the other hand, if you've retired and then find you're bored silly, taking a part time job can literally be a life saver.  I've known many folks over the years that jumped on early retirement without thinking it through and then found they were miserable.  A lot of them didn't live too long, and I really think part of the cause was losing the sense of purpose that the job gave them.

Personally, I've been retired three years now and have had no desire to seek employment.  If that changes, I'll be looking for something a lot better than working at a Harley shop.  If you guys promise not to steal my idea, I'll tell you my plan.
