“The Dragon,” U.S. 129/State Route 115, remains closed after a Sunday rock slide.
The slide occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday when several large boulders fell from the mountainside approximately two miles south of Chilhowee Dam and 13 miles north of the state line. Tennessee Department of Transportation crews were able temporarily re-open the southbound lane on Sunday afternoon to relieve backed-up traffic, but both lanes are now shut down pending a report from department geologists. Engineers have conducted preliminary evaluations of the slide and are developing a plan to stabilize the mountainside and safely re-open the road safely.
TDOT has set up blockades about 0.3 of a mile north of the Tennessee side and a little more than a mile south of the North Carolina side of the slide in order to provide adequate turnarounds for motorists. The closest alternative to traveling to North Carolina via U.S. 129 is U.S. 441 through Sevier County, which is prone to weather-related closing during the winter season. Motorists should check road conditions at 865-436-1200 before planning to use 441.
