New Progressive Monotube system
« on: April 02, 2010, 11:35:26 AM »

Decided to start a new thread about the monotubes.  Ordered mine this winter and had them installed. Yesterday was my first ride with them. During the 100 mile ride, I noticed they felt about the same as the stock shocks. Couldn't really tell a big difference, maybe better in cornering. I also had a new 408 front tire put on at the same time, so maybe it wasn't a fair test. There was no vibration or shimmy to 100 mph, very smooth. They seemed to almost bottom out, althought they didn't. But travel was fairly long.  My only complaint is when I hit the front brake hard, there is a "clunk". Doesn't make a difference how fast I going. Slow--clunk,  fast---clunk. If I put constant slow pressure on the brake, it doesn't clunk. Only when I hit the brake quickly.

Took it to the dealer and they rode it and determined it wasn't the floating brake rotor. It was in the front end.  He said it seemed to travel too far, compared to the stock suspension.  They questioned the neck bearing and will tighten it on Monday.

I called Progressive and they said it may need more preload. They are sending me a set of preload spacers to add. The kits they sell now all have them included.  They say this may be causing it to bottom out and it needs more preload.  The problem is, now it will cost me another $300 to have the preload put in, being it took them 3 1/2  hours to switch them to begin with. And if one spacer isn't enough, then I have to add two--that's right, another $300 to add another spacer. And we still don't know if this will take care of the clunk.  He says that me weighing 240# my require a preload.

Has anyone else noticed this clunk? Has anyone else had them bottom out or come close? Sometimes looking for better leads to badder.  Almost wish I hadn't started this journey.  Will let you know more as it progresses.

Could you explain why it would cost 300$ to put the spacers in?

because they have to  take the front end apart again, remove the shocks and place the spacers, then reassemble. It took them 3 1/2 hrs to put them in the first time. Is that too long?

There are people in this group who can speak with more authority to this, but to me it seems that there must be a more reasonable approach.

That is too long.  Two hours would be too long.

That's what I need to know. I'll have to talk to them. Haven't decided if I'm even going to try the spacers. I just want to get rid of the clunk. Whatever it is.

I don't know what instructions they sent with the kit, but I'd suggest anyone planning to do this make some ride height measurements before tearing anything apart so you can calculate how much preload you will need.  As you're finding out, doing this stuff by trial and error can be a frustrating and time consuming experience, and if you're having someone else do the work it can also become rather expensive.  It wouldn't be too bad on a Dyna or any bike where the tubes extend through the upper steering head bracket.  With those, you just remove the top plug and insert the spacer on top of the spring, reinstall the plug and you're done.  The Touring models are a whole different ball game, and they require a lot more disassembly.

As for how long it should take, try sending a PM to hd-dude on this site.

I have used 15w fork oil with HD's low profile front springs in pre '09 MY and preferred the positive feedback compared to the stock fork oil. Would the 15w oil be compatible using Progressive springs??

oil is only there to keep things lubricated with the monotubes. uses 5oz er so and changing is close to install. ain't looked up maintenance schedule. gas cartridge and spring.

Picked up my bike with the Monotubes and Touring link installed .. I've had a chance to take it for a long weekend ride up the Nantahala Gorge and back.  I'm quite pleased with the results.  Fork dive -Gone , Expansion joint filling shakers - Gone. I'm able to hold a much tighter line through corners.  Riding 2 up is substantially improved , smooth as silk.

It's amazing , the bike actually handles now !

Well worth the investment.
